Biography

Short Description

Molaise of Leighlin, also known as Saint Laserian or Laisrén (Molaise being an Irish hypocoristic form of Laisrén), was a seventh-century Irish monastic founder, abbot, and bishop associated with the church of Lethglenn, now Old Leighlin in County Carlow. Contemporary documentation of his life is sparse. Later medieval hagiography and genealogical tradition present him as the son of Cairell, a noble of the Dál Fiatach of Ulster, and of a mother named Gemma, sometimes described as a princess from among the Irish in Scotland. These genealogical claims cannot be independently verified from seventh-century sources, but they follow the usual pattern by which early Irish saints were attached to royal kindreds. He is to be distinguished from other early Irish saints of the same name, notably Molaise of Devenish and Molaise of Inishmurray. A precise year of birth is not recorded in contemporary evidence; later reference works offer only approximate figures that vary among themselves.

According to the traditional vita, Laserian was baptized by Saint Abban and received his early formation in the Irish monastic schools, including a period of study under Saint Munna (Fintan Munnu) of Taghmon. Hagiographical accounts further relate that he travelled to Rome, where he was ordained priest—in some versions by Pope Gregory the Great—and later consecrated bishop by Pope Honorius I. Such Roman episodes are common literary motifs in Irish saints’ lives and cannot be confirmed in papal records, but they are consistent with the historically attested contacts between southern Irish churches and Rome in the early seventh century. On his return he established a monastery at Lethglenn in the territory of the Uí Dróna in Leinster, on a site in the Barrow valley that later became Old Leighlin. Later sources describe the house as a large community and a centre of learning, though the numbers given in medieval texts are not historically reliable.

Laserian is most securely placed in the historical record through his association with the Paschal controversy. In the early seventh century the churches of Ireland were divided over the method of calculating the date of Easter. A synod held at Magh Lene around 630 saw many of the southern Irish churches accept the Roman computation. Cummian’s letter on the Paschal question, a genuine seventh-century document, refers to a delegation sent to Rome that included a man named Laisrén, whom scholars have often identified with the abbot of Leighlin. Tradition holds that Laserian was a leading advocate of the Roman Easter in Leinster and that he served as bishop as well as abbot of Leighlin, a combination typical of the early Irish church. He died at Leighlin on 18 April, a date recorded in the Irish martyrologies; the year 639 is given by later annalistic and hagiographical sources and is the date generally accepted in modern reference works.

Devotion to Laserian remained centred on Old Leighlin. His feast is kept on 18 April. The medieval cathedral of Saint Laserian, now a Church of Ireland cathedral, occupies the site of the early monastery, and a holy well in the vicinity has long been associated with his cult. He is regarded as patron of the historical Diocese of Leighlin, later united with Kildare. No formal papal canonization is recorded; his cult belongs to the early, pre-congregational veneration of Irish monastic saints. Much of the narrative detail in the later lives remains legendary, but the existence of a significant seventh-century monastic church at Leighlin under an abbot-bishop named Laisrén or Laserian, active in the Easter debate, is the historical core on which the tradition rests.
