Biography

Short Description

Mummolus of Fleury (also rendered Mummol, Mommolus, or Mummolinus) was a Benedictine monk of the Merovingian era who served as the second abbot of the monastery of Fleury, later known as Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, on the Loire in the Frankish kingdom. The house was founded in the mid-seventh century by Leodebodus, abbot of Saint-Aignan of Orléans, who is counted as its first abbot. Mummolus succeeded him and governed the community in the following decades of that century. Almost nothing is recorded about his family, birthplace, or career before the abbacy; the surviving notices concern his role at Fleury rather than a personal life-story.

He is remembered above all for the translation to Fleury of relics identified as those of Saint Benedict of Nursia. Monte Cassino, Benedict’s monastery, had been sacked by the Lombards in the late sixth century and remained largely deserted through much of the seventh. According to the later tradition of Fleury, especially the ninth-century narrative of Adrevald of Fleury, Mummolus sent monks to the ruined site, where they recovered remains said to be Benedict’s and, in some versions, those of his sister Scholastica, and brought them back to the Loire. Dates assigned to this translation in medieval and modern literature vary, but they commonly fall in the third quarter of the seventh century. Whether or not the identification of the bones can be historically verified, the claim transformed Fleury into one of the chief Benedictine centres of the West and the principal shrine of Benedict in Gaul. After Monte Cassino was restored, it long contested Fleury’s possession of the founder’s body.

Beyond this episode the documentary record for Mummolus is thin. He appears as a named abbot in the origin-legend of the Fleury relic cult and in later martyrologies and Benedictine menologies, which treat him as a saint. A traditional year of death around 678 is repeated in many modern calendars, and his memoria is often assigned to 8 November; these particulars rest on later liturgical compilation rather than on a contemporary obituary. There is no reliable evidence that he held episcopal office, that he married, or that he was Bishop of Rome or patriarch of an Eastern see. His recorded religious life is that of a monk-abbot under the Rule associated with Benedict.

The cult of Mummolus remained essentially local, tied to the abbey whose second abbot he had been. Fleury itself, enriched by the Benedictine relics and by royal and aristocratic patronage, became a major house of learning and liturgy in the Carolingian age; writers such as Adrevald looked back to Mummolus as a founding figure of that prestige. Modern historians treat the seventh-century translation story with caution, noting both the spiritual and political value of relic claims and the late date of the fullest narratives, but they do not doubt that an abbot of this name governed Fleury in the seventh century and that a cult of Benedict was established there in that era. Mummolus thus stands as an obscure but structurally important figure in the early history of Benedictine monasticism in Francia.
