Biography

Short Description

The personal name Theophilus, from the Greek Theophilos, meaning friend of God or beloved of God, was common among Christian clergy and monastics from late antiquity onward. The bare designation Monk Theophilus, without a toponym, century, feast day, or religious order, does not correspond to a single individual who can be verified from reliable historical or hagiographical sources. Calendars of saints, monastic chronicles, and medieval literary tradition preserve several distinct men of this name, and it would be unsound to treat them as one person or to assign any one of them dates, places, or cultic honors by guesswork.

In the Christian East, Orthodox synaxaria and paterika mention more than one monk called Theophilus. A recluse of that name is associated with the Kiev Caves Lavra; another, Theophilus of Luga and Omutch, belongs to later medieval Russian monasticism. Greek menologia likewise record Studite and other monks named Theophilus, often with little more than a place of ascesis and a day of commemoration. These notices rarely supply a year of birth, and many do not record a year of death. None can be identified with certainty as the subject intended here.

In the Latin West, writers sometimes refer to Theophilus Presbyter, also styled Theophilus qui et Rugerus, the author or compiler of the early twelfth-century technical handbook De diversis artibus (or Schedula diversarum artium). The work is a principal source for Romanesque metalwork, painting, and glass, and it is often linked to Benedictine circles in northwestern Germany, possibly the abbey of Helmarshausen. Identification of the author with the goldsmith Roger of Helmarshausen remains conjectural. No verified birth or death year survives, and Theophilus Presbyter is not a canonized saint in the ordinary sense.

A separate and widely diffused medieval legend concerns Theophilus of Adana, presented in the earliest Greek account as an archdeacon or church steward of sixth-century Cilicia rather than as a monk. According to that story, he made a written pact with the devil and was later delivered through the intercession of the Virgin Mary; the tale became a major Marian miracle narrative and a distant antecedent of the Faust tradition. Later vernacular versions sometimes gave him a more monastic coloring, but that is a literary development, not a documented biography. Still another bearer of the name, the Corsican Observant Franciscan Biagio Arrighi, known as Theophilus of Corte (1676-1740) and canonized in 1930, was a friar, not a monk in the strict monastic sense of a man bound to a cloistered community under a monastic rule.

Because these figures differ in date, region, and state of life, no unique year of birth or death, place of burial, feast day, patronage, or act of canonization can be attached to Monk Theophilus as an unidentified subject. The biographical fields in this record are therefore left empty wherever a single, source-based identification cannot be made. A fuller and verifiable life would require at least a region, a century, or a liturgical commemoration to distinguish which Theophilus is meant.
