Biography

Short Description

Montanus (also rendered Montán or Montano) was a Catholic bishop of Toledo in the Visigothic Kingdom in the early sixth century and is among the earliest occupants of that see for whom contemporary written evidence survives. His episcopate is conventionally placed from about 523 until about 531. In 527, according to the usual dating of the acts, he presided as metropolitan over the Second Council of Toledo, a provincial synod of a small group of bishops from the interior of the Iberian Peninsula. The council issued disciplinary canons that regulated, among other matters, the upbringing of children offered by their parents for clerical service and questions of clerical continence and church order. These acts, together with two letters that circulate under his name, are the principal sources for his life and government.

The letters, preserved in later canonical collections associated with the Collectio Hispana, show Montanus asserting the metropolitan rights of Toledo over churches in the former Roman province of Carthaginensis, above all over the church of Palencia. He insisted that major acts of church government, including episcopal consecration, required the consent of the metropolitan, and he rebuked irregularities among the Palentine clergy. The claim is historically significant because the traditional metropolitan city of Carthaginensis was Cartagena on the Mediterranean coast, whereas Toledo was an inland see whose later primacy over Spain was only beginning to take shape. Montanus’s correspondence is therefore early evidence of Toledo’s effort to gather the interior dioceses under its authority.

He held office while the Visigothic kings were still Arians and the Hispano-Roman population and its bishops remained Catholic. Under King Amalaric the Catholic hierarchy continued to meet in provincial synods and to litigate questions of jurisdiction and discipline with a measure of internal autonomy. Toledo had not yet become the settled royal capital it would be in the later sixth and seventh centuries, but it was already an important ecclesiastical centre. The Second Council of Toledo and Montanus’s letters thus illuminate Catholic church order in Iberia more than half a century before the conversion of King Reccared and the Third Council of Toledo in 589, which transformed the relationship between the monarchy and the Catholic episcopate.

Almost nothing is known of his origins, family, or early career, and no reliable source records a place or year of birth. The year commonly given for his death, 531, is the conventional end of his recorded episcopate rather than a narrated obituary; the place of death and burial are not documented. Later Spanish tradition has sometimes numbered him among the holy bishops of Toledo, but he does not occupy a secure place in the universal martyrologies, and no feast day, patronage, or formal act of canonization is firmly attested in the surviving historical record. His importance for history and for the later prestige of the church of Toledo rests on the synod he convened and on the letters that document an early assertion of Toledan metropolitan authority.
