Biography

Short Description

Movses Khorenatsi, known in Latin as Moses of Chorene or Moses Chorenensis, is the most influential of the early Armenian historians and is traditionally honored as the Father of Armenian History. He is the attributed author of the History of Armenia (Patmutiun Hayots), a comprehensive narrative that traces the Armenians from their legendary origins down to the end of the Arsacid kingdom in the fifth century. The work became the classic statement of Armenian national origins and was copied, excerpted, and continued by virtually every later medieval Armenian chronicler. Because of its literary ambition and its role in shaping Armenian historical consciousness, Movses occupies a place in Armenian letters comparable to that of a national historian and founding father of the written past.

According to the traditional Armenian account, Movses lived in the fifth century and was a disciple of Mesrop Mashtots, inventor of the Armenian alphabet, and of Catholicos Sahak the Great. He is said to have been sent abroad for higher study, visiting centers of learning such as Alexandria, and to have returned to Armenia to take part in the translation movement that produced the Armenian Bible and a native Christian literature. The History itself contains first-person remarks claiming that the work was written at the request of Prince Sahak Bagratuni. These autobiographical notices, however, cannot be confirmed by independent fifth-century sources, and they form part of a later tradition that also assigned Movses a birthplace in a village called Khorni or Khoren, from which his epithet Khorenatsi is derived. Neither the village nor the precise region—sometimes given as Taron, sometimes as Syunik—can be established with certainty.

Modern scholarship has long been divided over the date of the History and therefore over the historical existence of a fifth-century Movses. Defenders of the traditional dating point to the work's claim to be a fifth-century composition and to its use of sources that could have been available in that period. Critics have noted apparent anachronisms, possible dependence on later authors, and linguistic and ideological features that seem more at home in the eighth or ninth century, when the Bagratid house was rising and a new Armenian historical literature was taking shape. As a result, it is not possible to assign verified years of birth or death to Movses, nor to reconstruct a documentary biography. What can be said is that by the high Middle Ages the figure of Movses Khorenatsi was firmly established in Armenian tradition as a saintly scholar of the golden age of Mesrop and Sahak.

The History of Armenia is organized in three books. It begins with the peopling of the world after Noah and the legendary patriarch Hayk, proceeds through the Orontid, Artaxiad, and Arsacid dynasties, and concludes with the abolition of the Armenian monarchy by the Sasanians and the mission of Mesrop Mashtots. Movses draws on the Bible, on Greek and Syriac historians, on Iranian epic material, and on native oral tradition, including the famous cycle of Ara the Beautiful and the queen Semiramis. He gives lists of noble families (nakharars), geographical notices, and an account of the conversion of King Tiridates III by Gregory the Illuminator. Even where the narrative is legendary or tendentious, it preserved names, genealogies, and stories that would otherwise have been lost, and it supplied later Armenians with a continuous royal and ecclesiastical past at times when they lacked an independent state.

Movses is venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic Church and is commemorated together with the Holy Translators, the group of fifth-century scholars associated with the invention of the alphabet and the creation of Armenian Christian literature. Homilies, a work of rhetoric, and a geography have also circulated under his name, though their authorship is as debated as that of the History. Regardless of the unresolved questions of dating, the text attributed to Movses Khorenatsi remains the cornerstone of Armenian historiography and a primary monument of classical Armenian prose. His reputation as the father of Armenian history has endured from the Middle Ages to the present, and his work continues to be studied both as a source for the ancient and early medieval Caucasus and as a foundational document of Armenian national identity.
