Biography

Short Description

Sophie Leeves, known in religion as Mother Mary Veronica of the Passion, was born on 1 October 1823 in Constantinople, then the capital of the Ottoman Empire. She was the daughter of the Reverend Henry Daniel Leeves, an Anglican priest who served as chaplain to the British Embassy, and of Marina Leeves, née Haultain. Her childhood and youth were spent among the British ecclesiastical and diplomatic circles of the eastern Mediterranean, including Constantinople and later Athens, where her father also ministered. She was raised in the Church of England and given a careful education. The religious debates of the mid-nineteenth century, together with family bereavement, formed the setting in which she began to examine the claims of the Catholic Church.

In 1850 she was received into the Roman Catholic Church, a decision that strained her ties with her Anglican family. The following year she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition, a French missionary institute founded by Emilie de Vialar. After profession she was sent to India. On the Malabar Coast, especially at Calicut, she taught and helped organize Catholic education for girls. Contact with Discalced Carmelite missionaries, above all Bishop Marie Ephrem of the Sacred Heart, strengthened her attraction to Carmelite spirituality and to a form of religious life that would join contemplative prayer with an active apostolate of teaching in India.

With episcopal encouragement she established in 1868, at Bayonne in France, the Congregation of the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel, a Third Order Carmelite community dedicated to the education of young women in the Indian missions. The first sisters of the new institute reached Mangalore in 1870 and opened schools that became the nucleus of a large teaching congregation. Administrative tensions, differing views about the character of the foundation, and the hardships of the work led Mother Veronica to leave India. She returned to Europe and, seeking a fully contemplative life, entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery at Pau in southwestern France.

She spent the rest of her life in the cloister at Pau and took no further public part in governing the Apostolic Carmel, which continued and expanded in India under other superiors. She died at the Carmel of Pau on 16 November 1906. She has not been beatified or canonized. Her principal historical legacy is the Congregation of the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel, which remains a major Catholic educational institute in India and beyond.
