Biography

Short Description

Mykola Konrad was a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, born on 16 May 1876 in the village of Strusiv in the Ternopil area of Galicia, then part of Austria-Hungary. He received his higher education in Rome, where he studied philosophy and theology and took doctorates in those disciplines. He was ordained a priest in 1899. Returning to Galicia, he combined pastoral work with teaching, serving as a religion instructor in secondary schools, including gymnasiums in Berezhany and Terebovlia, and forming young people in the Greek Catholic tradition at a time when Ukrainian church life in the Habsburg lands was expanding.

In the interwar years, when eastern Galicia belonged to the Second Polish Republic, Konrad joined the scholarly revival associated with Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. From the early 1930s he was a professor at the Greek Catholic Theological Academy in Lviv, teaching subjects connected with social thought and the intellectual preparation of clergy. The academy was intended to raise the academic standard of the Ukrainian Catholic priesthood. Konrad belonged to that generation of eparchial priests who sought to hold together Eastern liturgical practice, moral theology, and attention to the social questions facing Ukrainian communities between the wars.

Soviet occupation of the region in 1939 led to the suppression of the Theological Academy and to mounting pressure on the Greek Catholic Church. Konrad then took up parish work in Stradch, a village near Lviv, serving the local faithful and continuing to teach as circumstances allowed. In June 1941, after the German invasion of the Soviet Union, retreating NKVD forces carried out killings of prisoners and of persons regarded as hostile. On 26 June 1941 Father Konrad set out with the parish cantor Volodymyr Pryima to visit a sick woman and to administer the sacraments. The two men were seized in a forest near Stradch and murdered. Their bodies were later found and buried in Stradch.

The Catholic Church judged Konrad’s death to be martyrdom in the setting of twentieth-century persecution of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. On 27 June 2001, during his apostolic visit to Ukraine, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Lviv together with a group of other bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople of that Church who had died as martyrs. Konrad is venerated as a blessed hieromartyr. His memory is kept especially in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church; Stradch and the nearby site associated with his death have remained places of remembrance and pilgrimage.
