Biography

Short Description

Honora Nagle, known throughout her life as Nano, was born in 1718 at Ballygriffin, near Mallow in County Cork, Ireland, into a landed Catholic family that retained some means despite the Penal Laws restricting Catholic landholding, education, and public worship. Her father, Garret Nagle, belonged to a well-connected Gaelic family; her mother, Ann Mathew, came from Thomastown in County Tipperary. Because Catholic schooling was illegal in Ireland, Nano and her sister were sent to France for their education, most likely in Paris, where they received a convent education typical of the Catholic gentry of the period. After a time of fashionable social life on the Continent, and following the deaths of her parents, she experienced a deepening of religious conviction and returned to Ireland determined to use her inheritance for the relief and instruction of the Catholic poor.

In the mid-eighteenth century she settled in Cork and, in defiance of the Penal Laws, opened a succession of clandestine schools. The first, begun about 1754 in a rented cabin off Cove Lane, taught poor girls the catechism, reading, and practical skills; she later added schools for boys and further schools for girls, eventually supporting some seven schools in the city and its outskirts. She financed the work from her own fortune, lived with extreme personal austerity, and at night walked the lanes of Cork with a lantern to visit the sick and destitute in their cabins, an image that later earned her the popular title of the Lady of the Lantern. Her schools combined elementary literacy with Catholic religious instruction at a time when both were denied to the majority of the Irish population.

Seeking a more stable religious framework for the work, Nagle invited Ursuline nuns from France, who arrived in Cork in 1771. Their enclosed life and emphasis on educating daughters of the better-off did not match her intention of going out among the poorest. Accordingly, on 24 December 1775 she and three companions—Mary Ann Collins, Elizabeth Burke, and Mary Fouhy—began community life as the Sisters of Charitable Instruction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the nucleus of the congregation later known as the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Nagle herself took religious vows and is regarded as the foundress of the Presentation Sisters. The new community combined teaching of the poor with visitation of the sick, a form of active apostolate unusual for women religious in Ireland at that date.

Nano Nagle’s health, long undermined by overwork and by the conditions in which she lived, failed in the early 1780s. She died on 26 April 1784 at the convent in Cork and was buried in the grounds of what became the South Presentation Convent. After her death the congregation spread through Ireland and, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to many other countries, receiving papal recognition in the years following her death. Nagle’s cause for canonization was introduced in the twentieth century; Pope Francis declared her Venerable on 31 October 2013, recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues. She has not been beatified or canonized. She is commemorated especially on 26 April, the anniversary of her death, and remains a central figure in the history of Catholic education and of women’s religious life in eighteenth-century Ireland.
