Biography

Short Description

Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán was born on 29 October 1832 in Nobol (then commonly called San José de Nobol), a rural settlement in the coastal province of Guayas, Ecuador. She was the daughter of Pedro Martillo, a small landowner, and Narcisa Morán, and grew up in a modest agricultural household. Her mother died while Narcisa was still a child, and she thereafter helped with farm and domestic work. She received little formal schooling and remained essentially a woman of the countryside, formed by popular Catholic practice rather than by convent education. From an early age she was noted for an intense attraction to prayer, the Eucharist, and voluntary penance.

After her father’s death she left Nobol and settled in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s principal port. There she supported herself by domestic service and sewing and lived as a laywoman who never married and never entered a religious congregation. She organized her days around the sacraments, prolonged prayer, and severe bodily mortification, including fasting, night vigils, and instruments of penance. Local clergy and devout families gave her lodging at various times, and a quiet reputation for holiness spread among those who sought her prayers. In 1868, seeking a more hidden and directed spiritual life, she traveled to Lima, Peru.

In Lima she was received as a lay resident in the Dominican convent of El Patrocinio. She occupied a small room, followed the liturgical rhythm of the house as far as a laywoman could, and continued her austere practices. Her already fragile health declined. On 8 December 1869, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, she died in Lima at the age of thirty-seven. Reports surrounding her death and the later condition of her remains helped to foster an immediate popular cult in both Peru and Ecuador. Her body was later transferred from Lima to Guayaquil and, in the twentieth century, to a shrine in her native Nobol, which became a national sanctuary.

Devotion to her grew through the later nineteenth and twentieth centuries, supported by testimony from those who had known her and by favors attributed to her intercession. The cause for her canonization was advanced in Ecuador. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 25 October 1992 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on 12 October 2008 in Saint Peter’s Square. The Roman Catholic Church keeps her liturgical memorial on 30 August. She is remembered as a lay saint whose life of hidden penance and Eucharistic devotion unfolded outside the cloister, in ordinary rural and urban settings of nineteenth-century Ecuador and Peru.
