Biography

Narciso de Esténaga y Echevarría was born on 29 October 1882 in Logroño, in the historic region of La Rioja in northern Spain. He pursued studies for the priesthood and was ordained a priest on 17 July 1909. In the following years he served in teaching, pastoral ministry, and ecclesiastical administration. His competence and fidelity to the Holy See led to his being entrusted with important responsibilities in the Spanish Church during the pontificate of Pius XI, as the country passed from the Restoration monarchy through the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera toward the Second Republic.

On 14 December 1922 he was appointed titular bishop of Dora and apostolic administrator of Ciudad Real, a Castilian jurisdiction whose history was bound up with the Spanish military orders of Calatrava, Santiago, Alcántara, and Montesa. He received episcopal consecration on 22 July 1923. He subsequently became the Bishop of Ciudad Real and governed the diocese through the last years of the monarchy and the difficult first years of the Second Spanish Republic. The republican constitution of 1931 and later laws curtailed the public role of the Church, and anticlerical outbreaks, including the burning of religious buildings, already signaled the dangers that would explode in 1936. As bishop he worked to sustain Catholic life, clergy formation, and the pastoral care of a largely rural flock.

When the Spanish Civil War began in July 1936, the province of Ciudad Real remained under Republican control. A fierce persecution of the Catholic Church ensued. Bishop Esténaga did not abandon his see. In August 1936 Republican militiamen arrested him together with his secretary, the priest Julio Melgar Salgado. On 22 August 1936 the two were taken from Ciudad Real and shot; their bodies were left near the locality of Peralvillo. The killing belonged to the vast wave of murders of bishops, priests, men and women religious, and lay Catholics in the Republican zone, which the Catholic Church has regarded as martyrdom in odium fidei.

The cause of beatification of Narciso de Esténaga y Echevarría proceeded on the grounds of martyrdom. He was beatified on 13 October 2013 at Tarragona, Spain, as one of a group of 522 martyrs of the religious persecution of the 1930s in Spain. The ceremony took place during the pontificate of Pope Francis. He is venerated as Blessed Narciso de Esténaga y Echevarría. No extensive official list of patronages is commonly attached to his name, and he is remembered above all as a bishop-martyr of the Diocese of Ciudad Real and of the Church in Spain in the twentieth century.
