Biography

Short Description

Saint Narcissus of Girona, known in Catalan as Sant Narcís and in Spanish as San Narciso, is venerated as a bishop and martyr and is the patron saint of the city of Girona in Catalonia. Virtually nothing about him can be confirmed from contemporary historical evidence. No episcopal list or late antique chronicle securely places a bishop of this name at Girona in the third or fourth century, and the earliest historically attested bishop of the see belongs to the sixth century. Scholars therefore treat the traditional fourth-century career and martyrdom as a medieval hagiographical construction rather than a recoverable biography. It is possible that the local cult absorbed or was modeled on that of Narcissus of Jerusalem, a Palestinian bishop mentioned by Eusebius of Caesarea, whose feast is observed on the same date.

Later passion narratives present Narcissus as bishop of Girona at the time of the Diocletianic persecution. They relate that he left Hispania with his deacon Felix and journeyed to Augsburg, where he is said to have converted Saint Afra and members of her household from paganism. After returning to Girona he and Felix were arrested and put to death. These stories cannot be verified independently and share many conventional features of early medieval martyr legends. A further complication is that Girona already possessed a well-known martyr named Felix (Sant Feliu), an African Christian commemorated by the poet Prudentius in the late fourth or early fifth century; the pairing of Narcissus with a deacon Felix in the later legend may reflect an attempt to associate the two cults. Traditional dates such as a martyrdom in 307 belong to this legendary cycle and are not established by reliable historical sources.

The center of Narcissus's veneration is the church of Sant Feliu in Girona, a building that originated as a martyrial church outside the Roman walls and later became a collegiate church. A Gothic sepulcher there has long been identified as the tomb of Saint Narcissus. In 1285, during the French invasion of Catalonia led by Philip III, occupying soldiers are said to have broken into this tomb. According to the well-known local tradition, a dense swarm of flies or stinging insects then emerged from the sepulcher and attacked the army, causing heavy casualties and contributing to the invaders' withdrawal. The episode, remembered as the miracle of the flies of Saint Narcissus (les mosques de Sant Narcís), was retold in subsequent centuries during later conflicts and became a civic emblem of the city's deliverance.

Devotion to Narcissus is concentrated on 29 October, which is both his feast day and the occasion of the Fires de Sant Narcís, Girona's principal annual fair and civic festival. He is invoked as patron of the city. Although he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type, his cult was firmly established in the diocese by the High Middle Ages and has remained a distinctive element of Girona's religious and municipal identity. The historical person, if any, behind the legend remains unknown; what can be studied with confidence is the development of the cult, the tomb in Sant Feliu, and the civic miracle stories that grew around his name.
