Biography

Short Description

Narcyz Turchan was a Polish Roman Catholic priest and Franciscan friar venerated as a blessed martyr of the Catholic Church. He was born in 1879 in Biedrzychowice, in Polish lands then under the partitions. He entered the Order of Friars Minor and was ordained to the priesthood. His life and ministry belonged to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period in which the Catholic Church and the religious orders remained central to Polish spiritual and national life, first under foreign rule and then in the restored Polish Republic after 1918.

As a Franciscan he belonged to a mendicant tradition of community life, preaching, and pastoral care. Widely available historical notices of his career are brief. They do not preserve a detailed public record of the convents in which he lived or of particular parishes or offices he held. Like many Polish religious of his generation who were later killed under the occupation, he is known to later generations chiefly through the circumstances of his arrest and death rather than through a full contemporary biography.

After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, the Nazi occupation authorities carried out a planned assault on the Polish clergy, whom they regarded as leaders of national identity and as an obstacle to Germanization. Large numbers of diocesan priests and members of religious orders were arrested, imprisoned, and deported. Turchan was among those seized and sent to the Dachau concentration camp in Bavaria. Dachau held a special section for clergy; Polish priests formed the largest national group there and suffered a very high death rate from hunger, disease, forced labor, and abuse.

Turchan died at Dachau in 1942. On 13 June 1999, in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified him together with 107 other Polish victims of Nazi persecution who had died for the faith. The group is known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II and is commemorated liturgically on 12 June. Turchan has not been canonized. He is remembered as a Franciscan priest-martyr of the concentration-camp system and as one representative of the Polish Church’s suffering under totalitarian occupation.
