Biography

Short Description

Saint Natalia of Córdoba, known earlier as Sabigotho, was a ninth-century Christian martyr executed in Córdoba, capital of the Umayyad Emirate in al-Andalus, during the cluster of voluntary martyrdoms that took place there between 850 and 859. Almost everything that can be said of her rests on the contemporary Latin narratives of Saint Eulogius of Córdoba, above all the Memoriale sanctorum, which recorded Christians put to death under the emirs Abd al-Rahman II and Muhammad I. Natalia belonged to the Christian population living under Islamic rule and, like several of the Córdoba martyrs, came from a family of mixed religious background rather than from a monastic or clerical milieu.

According to Eulogius, Sabigotho was the daughter of a Muslim father and a Christian mother and had for a time lived outwardly according to Islamic custom. She married Aurelius, a man of similar parentage: his father had been a Muslim and his mother a Christian, and after his father’s death he had been raised as a Christian by an aunt. The couple had two daughters and possessed some property. Although they were Christians in conviction, they maintained a public appearance compatible with Islamic society, concealing their practice of the faith in a manner attested among certain families of mixed descent in ninth-century Córdoba.

The public executions of other Córdoba Christians, and the atmosphere of confession that surrounded that movement, led Aurelius and Natalia to abandon concealment. They began to live their Christianity more openly, visiting imprisoned confessors and preparing a public profession of faith. They were arrested and brought before a judge; in Aurelius’s case the magistrate was a kinsman who sought to spare them. After a period of detention they were released on condition that they resume an Islamic way of life. Instead they used the interval to settle their affairs: they placed their two daughters in Christian religious care and distributed much of their property. They then presented themselves again, together with another married couple, Felix and Liliosa, who had likewise lived as secret Christians.

On 27 July 852 Natalia and Aurelius were beheaded in Córdoba, together with Felix, Liliosa, and a monk named George who had come from the monastery of Saint Sabas near Jerusalem. Their deaths form part of the larger group later known as the Martyrs of Córdoba. Natalia’s cult, like that of her companions, remained primarily local and was transmitted through Eulogius’s narratives and later martyrologies. She is commemorated on 27 July with Aurelius and those who died with them. Independent documentation beyond Eulogius is lacking, and details of her birth, burial, and any later specialized patronage are not securely recorded.
