Biography

Short Description

Nath Í of Achonry, whose name appears in Irish sources as Nathí, Nathy, and Cruimthir Nathy (Priest Nathy), was a sixth-century Irish monastic founder associated with Achadh Chonaire, now Achonry, in the barony of Leyney, County Sligo. He belonged to the Luighne of Connacht, the people of that district. No contemporary biography survives, and almost everything that can be said of him depends on later martyrologies, genealogies, and the traditions of the medieval diocese that claimed him as its first bishop. Early modern compilers such as John Colgan gathered these notices, and they were repeated in works such as Alban Butler’s lives of the saints, but they do not rest on sixth-century documentation.

Tradition makes him a pupil of Finnian of Clonard, a principal monastic teacher of sixth-century Ireland. Finnian is said to have directed him to the territory of Luighne, where Nath Í established a church and monastery at Achonry. In the Irish Church of that period such a foundation would typically have been a monastic community under a priest-abbot, serving the surrounding túath. The calendars consistently call him cruimthir, “priest,” which has led some modern writers to doubt whether he was a bishop in his lifetime. Later diocesan tradition, and some hagiographical accounts, present him as having been consecrated bishop and as the first ordinary of Achonry. The tension reflects the difference between early Irish monastic organization and the territorial dioceses created in the twelfth-century reform.

His feast day is 9 August, as recorded in Irish calendars including the Martyrology of Tallaght and the Martyrology of Donegal, the latter styling him Cruimther Nathi of Achonry. When the Irish Church was reorganized on a diocesan basis in the twelfth century, Achonry became the see of a diocese covering parts of present-day Counties Sligo, Mayo, and Roscommon, and Nath Í was adopted as its patron and reputed founder. The cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Achonry, now at Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon, is dedicated to him under the name Saint Nathy; a Church of Ireland cathedral at Achonry itself also preserved the dedication. Precise dates of birth and death are unknown. Older handbooks sometimes give a death about the year 610, but that figure is conventional and unverified. Nothing reliable is recorded of the circumstances of his death or of a specific burial place, though local tradition associates both with Achonry.

Nath Í remains an obscure saint even within the Irish calendar and should not be confused with other early Irish figures of similar name. Nothing reliable is recorded of a spouse or children, and his manner of life is that of a monastic founder rather than a later religious order. His cult is essentially local and diocesan. The scarcity of early narrative material means that a cautious account must emphasize the continuity of place and feast rather than a detailed personal history: a priest of the Luighne who founded the church of Achonry in the sixth century, commemorated on 9 August, and thereafter remembered as the patron of that see.
