Biography

Short Description

Nectarius of Vienne was a bishop of the Gallo-Roman metropolitan see of Vienne, on the Rhône in what is now southeastern France, during the middle decades of the fifth century. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family, education, or the path by which he entered clerical life. Like most bishops of late antique Gaul, he is known from later episcopal catalogues, martyrological notices, and his place in the relative chronology of the see rather than from a contemporary biography or a body of writings. Vienne had been a major city of the Allobroges and a prominent Roman colony; by Nectarius’s time its bishop claimed metropolitan rights over a wide stretch of the middle Rhône valley, even as those rights were contested by the rival metropolitan see of Arles, a dispute that occupied popes and Gallic synods across the fifth century.

Traditional lists of the bishops of Vienne place Nectarius after Paschasius and immediately before Saint Mamertus, the far better attested prelate who, later in the century, instituted the Rogation processions in response to earthquakes and other calamities around Vienne. Nectarius’s tenure therefore belongs to the years when imperial administration in Gaul was collapsing and Burgundian federates were being settled in Sapaudia and along the Rhône (the Burgundian settlement is usually dated to the early 440s). He is commonly associated in diocesan and conciliar tradition with the First Council of Orange in 441, a synod of Gallic bishops under Hilary of Arles that issued disciplinary canons on church order, penitents, and the clergy. Exact years for the start and end of his episcopate are not securely documented; later writers have situated him in the 440s, and his death is generally placed in the mid-fifth century, shortly before Mamertus is clearly in office. No sermons, letters, or administrative acts can be attributed to Nectarius with confidence.

He should not be confused with other, better-documented figures of the same name, notably Nectarius of Constantinople, the late-fourth-century archbishop who succeeded Gregory of Nazianzus, or with the Auvergnat saint Nectaire associated with the Christianization of the Massif Central. The historical Nectarius of Vienne stands in a local line of bishops whose sanctity was remembered in the church of Vienne and taken up by medieval martyrologists. The ninth-century Ado of Vienne, himself a bishop of that see and compiler of a widely used martyrology, gave particular attention to the saints of Vienne, and later Latin martyrologies preserve a notice of Nectarius as bishop of that city.

Veneration of Nectarius as a saint is of long standing in the Latin church and belongs to the age before formal papal canonization. His cult rests on local episcopal memory and liturgical observance rather than on a surviving medieval vita of any length. He is commemorated on 5 May in martyrological tradition associated with Vienne. Beyond his identification as a holy bishop of that see, no specialized patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or social groups are securely attached to his name in the historical record. The scarcity of contemporary evidence means that any fuller portrait of his character, pastoral work, or role in the Arles–Vienne primacy struggle would be speculative.
