Biography

Short Description

Saint Neot was a ninth-century monk and hermit of Anglo-Saxon England, remembered principally as the patron of the Cornish village of St Neot and of the town of St Neots in Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire). Almost nothing about him can be established from sources written in his own lifetime. The narrative of his career depends on Latin lives of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, on an Old English life related to that tradition, and on later medieval legend. Those texts present him as a monk of Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset who left the community in search of greater solitude and settled as a hermit in a remote valley on the southern fringe of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, at the place that afterwards took his name. Later medieval and early modern writers sometimes added that he was of noble or royal West Saxon birth, and a few antiquaries identified him as a brother or close kinsman of King Alfred the Great. Modern historical scholarship regards those genealogical claims as unsubstantiated and treats the detailed biography as hagiographical rather than documentary.

In Cornwall, according to the same legendary cycle, Neot lived beside a spring and practised a severe ascetic life. A small monastic following is said to have formed around his cell. Hagiographers emphasised his short physical stature and attributed to him a series of miracles. The best-known story tells of three fishes that swam in his well or pool: he was allowed to take only one for food each day, after which the number was miraculously made up again; when a disciple, during Neot’s illness, took two fishes, the saint restored them to the water and they revived. Another strand of legend links him with King Alfred. Alfred is said to have visited the hermit, to have been rebuked for his shortcomings, and to have received a prophecy of coming calamity—later associated with the king’s refuge at Athelney in 878—if he did not amend his life. No ninth-century chronicle confirms a meeting between the two men, and historians generally view the Alfred episodes as later inventions intended to honour both the saint and the West Saxon dynasty.

Tradition places Neot’s death in Cornwall on 31 July in the later ninth century, often approximately dated to the 870s, and his first burial at his Cornish oratory. The site developed into a parish church and village under his name, and it remained a local pilgrimage centre; a famous late-medieval stained-glass window cycle in the church at St Neot illustrates scenes from his legend. In the late tenth century, during the period of Benedictine revival in England, relics believed to be his were taken from Cornwall to a church at Eynesbury on the River Ouse in Huntingdonshire. A Benedictine priory grew up there, and the neighbouring town became known as St Neots. Both locations continued to claim his patronage. His feast is observed on 31 July, with some medieval calendars also noting a translation feast in October.

Because the surviving lives were composed long after the ninth century, the historical individual behind the cult is obscure. Scholars commonly accept that an early medieval hermit-monk named Neot was venerated in Cornwall and that a relic cult was established in Huntingdonshire, but they separate that kernel from the royal pedigree, the Alfred narrative, and the miracle stories. Neot was not canonised by a formal papal process of the kind used in later centuries; his status as a saint rests on local veneration, liturgical commemoration, and inclusion in medieval martyrologies. He remains, for historians, a figure whose widespread medieval popularity is clearer than the facts of his earthly life.
