Biography

Short Description

Nerses of Lambron (Armenian: Nerses Lambronatsi) was born in 1153 at the fortress of Lambron (also spelled Lampron) in the Taurus Mountains of Cilicia, in the Armenian principalities of southeastern Anatolia. He belonged to the Hethumid princely house: his father was Oshin, lord of Lambron, and his mother was a sister of Catholicos Nerses IV the Gracious (Nerses Shnorhali), which placed him at the intersection of Cilician Armenia’s leading secular and ecclesiastical families. He was educated at the monastery of Skewra near Tarsus, where he studied Scripture, patristic theology, philosophy, and languages, and he came under the influence of Nerses Shnorhali and of Catholicos Gregory IV Tgha. In addition to Armenian he acquired Greek and Syriac, and later Latin, which equipped him for the translation work and inter-church negotiations that marked his career.

He was ordained to the priesthood while still young and in 1176, at about the age of twenty-three, was consecrated Archbishop of Tarsus by Catholicos Gregory IV. Tarsus was a principal see of Cilician Armenia and a point of contact among Armenian, Greek, Latin, and Syrian Christians. As archbishop, Nerses became one of the chief Armenian advocates of closer relations among the separated churches. He took part in the union discussions with the Byzantine Church in the later twelfth century, including the deliberations associated with the synod of Hromkla, and he later showed a corresponding openness toward Latin clergy as Crusader and papal contacts increased in Cilicia. His approach was irenic rather than polemical: he explained Armenian rites and doctrine to outsiders and urged moral and liturgical seriousness at home, though no lasting institutional union was achieved in his lifetime.

Nerses was among the most productive Armenian scholars of the Cilician period. He translated into Armenian a substantial body of Greek and Latin material, including works associated with Gregory of Nyssa, the Rule of Saint Benedict, and other liturgical, canonical, and spiritual texts, thereby widening the sources available to Armenian monastic and episcopal schools. He wrote a commentary on the Divine Liturgy, homilies, letters, and a synodal discourse that called for reform and for peace among Christians. Later tradition remembers him as a vardapet, a doctor and teacher of the church, whose theology remained rooted in Armenian tradition while remaining unusually willing to learn from Byzantine and Western writers.

He died in 1198, at about forty-five years of age, and was buried at the monastery of Skewra. The Armenian Apostolic Church venerates him as a saint, and his memory is kept on 17 July in a number of calendars. He was never Catholicos or a bishop of Rome; his office was the archbishopric of Tarsus. Subsequent Armenian tradition has regarded him as a model bishop, translator, and advocate of Christian unity, and modern historical scholarship treats him as a central figure of the late-twelfth-century intellectual and ecclesiastical life of Cilician Armenia.
