Biography

Short Description

Nicander (Italian: Nicandro), Marcian (Marciano, Latin Marcianus), and Daria are early Christian martyrs venerated as the principal patrons of Venafro (ancient Venafrum) in Molise, Italy. The Roman Martyrology records Nicander and Marcian at Venafro on 17 June; the local church of Venafro has from an early date associated Daria with them and honours all three on that day. Tradition places their death in the persecution of Diocletian and Maximian in the early fourth century. No contemporary historical document names them, and the literary Passio that recounts their trial and execution is a later hagiographical composition whose individual details cannot be independently verified.

The traditional narrative presents Nicander and Marcian as Roman soldiers who had converted to Christianity. When they refused to comply with edicts requiring sacrifice to the gods, they were arrested and brought before a magistrate called Maximus. They confessed the Christian faith and declined to apostatize. During their imprisonment they were visited by members of their families. Daria, described as the wife of Nicander and a Christian, exhorted her husband to persevere rather than to seek release by sacrificing. The two soldiers were condemned and beheaded outside Venafro. In Venafro’s own tradition Daria is herself counted among the martyrs, although the oldest martyrological entries mention only Nicander and Marcian.

Their relics have long been preserved at Venafro and are now kept in the cathedral, the co-cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. A basilica or memorial church stood over the place of burial in late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Pope Leo IX is reported to have visited the shrine in 1059. Nicander, Marcian, and Daria remain the chief patron saints of Venafro; the feast of 17 June is observed there with civic as well as liturgical solemnity. The antiquity of the cult at this site is the principal historical indication that Christians were martyred at Venafrum during the imperial persecutions and were commemorated under these names.

Little can be established about their birth, earlier careers, or family beyond what the Passio asserts. The Greek name Nicander has sometimes been taken to suggest an eastern origin, but this remains conjecture. Modern scholarship therefore treats them as local martyrs of the Diocletianic age whose memory was maintained by the church of Venafro, while regarding the dialogues and secondary characters of the Acts as belonging to the conventions of martyr literature rather than to recoverable biography.
