Biography

Short Description

Nicanor (Greek: Nikanōr) is known to history as one of the Seven chosen in Jerusalem to oversee the daily distribution to widows, an episode recorded in the sixth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. In the earliest Christian community a dispute arose between the Hebrew-speaking and Greek-speaking (Hellenist) believers over the care of widows. The Twelve, wishing to devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word, asked the disciples to select seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom. The community chose Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus of Antioch; the apostles then prayed and laid hands on them. This event, placed in Jerusalem in the first decades of the first century, is the only notice of Nicanor that rests on a source of undisputed standing. Acts records no further word, journey, or fate for him, unlike Stephen, whose martyrdom is narrated at length, and Philip, whose later preaching is described.

Later ecclesiastical tradition, which is neither uniform nor independently verifiable, supplies the remainder of his dossier. Eastern sources often number him, with several of his companions, among the Seventy (or Seventy-Two) sent out by Christ, an identification that belongs to the later expansion of apostolic lists rather than to first-century evidence. Hagiographical accounts reflected in the Roman Martyrology and in Byzantine synaxaria state that after the scattering of the Jerusalem church he preached on the island of Cyprus and suffered martyrdom there. That death is commonly assigned to the reign of the emperor Vespasian and is sometimes given the year 76, but the year is traditional rather than historically controlled. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 10 January with the notice “at Cyprus,” calling him one of the first seven deacons, admirable in faith and virtue, and gloriously crowned. The Eastern Orthodox Church keeps his memory on 28 July (10 August on the Julian calendar in some usages) together with the deacons Prochorus, Timon, and Parmenas. These liturgical commemorations attest an ancient cult; they do not yield a recoverable biography.

Nothing reliable is known of his family, marriage, children, or place of birth. Scripture does not say whether he was a native of Jerusalem, of the Diaspora, or of Cyprus; later writers who call him a Cypriot may be inferring origin from the traditional place of his ministry and death. He is not recorded as bishop, patriarch, or pope. The diaconate of the apostolic age was a ministry of service within the local church, not a later monastic religious order, and no such order can be attached to him. No burial site is securely identified, and the major martyrologies and liturgical books do not assign him distinctive patronages of places, professions, or causes.

The institution of the Seven has been read by later theology as the origin of the order of deacons, although modern scholarship notes that Acts does not apply the noun diakonos to these seven men, only the related language of serving at tables. Christian tradition from the patristic period nonetheless regarded Nicanor and his companions as the first deacons. Their selection illustrates the early church’s effort to hold together Jewish and Hellenistic believers and to organize charitable care as a distinct ministry. Of the seven, only Stephen and Philip receive further narrative in Acts; Prochorus is sometimes linked in later legend with the apostle John; Nicolaus became associated with the Nicolaitans of Revelation. Nicanor, Timon, and Parmenas remain the most obscure of the group. For the historian, Nicanor’s existence in the Jerusalem community of the first century is attested by Acts, while his subsequent life, death, and cult belong to pious tradition rather than to recoverable individual biography.
