Biography

Short Description

Nicasius of Rheims (Latin: Nicasius; French: Nicaise) was a bishop of Reims in the Roman province of Belgica Secunda, in northern Gaul, during the early fifth century. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, parentage, or education from contemporary documents; no reliable source records the year or place of his birth. He appears in the episcopal catalogues of Reims as a successor of Bishop Betausius and is customarily dated as occupying the see from about the year 400. The principal medieval narrative of his life and death is found in the tenth-century Historia Remensis ecclesiae of Flodoard of Reims, who drew on local tradition, liturgical commemoration, and earlier lists. In a period marked by the weakening of imperial administration in Gaul and by repeated crossings of the Rhine by Germanic groups, Nicasius is remembered as the bishop who provided a new cathedral church for his city.

Tradition holds that he built a basilica in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which became the cathedral of Reims and the predecessor of the later medieval cathedral of Notre-Dame. Hagiographical accounts, composed long after his lifetime, describe him as a bishop who foresaw a coming massacre. He is said to have exhorted the inhabitants either to flee or to prepare for death with the sacraments, and to have himself remained with those who could not or would not leave. These stories cannot be verified in fifth-century chronicles, which do not mention him by name, but they shaped his later cult as a martyr-bishop who did not abandon his people.

The conventional date of his martyrdom is 407, associated with the Vandal invasion of Gaul after the Rhine crossing of late 406. An alternative tradition links the killing to Attila’s campaign in Gaul in 451. Because no strictly contemporary testimony survives, the year remains a matter of hagiographical convention rather than of independently confirmed chronology; 407 is the date most often given in older martyrologies and Catholic reference works. According to the received legend, Nicasius was slain at the doorway of his church while reciting Psalm 118 (Vulgate numbering). A famous miracle motif, of a type found with other cephalophoric saints, asserts that his severed head continued the psalm. His sister Eutropia, described as a consecrated virgin, was killed with him after she confronted the attackers; companions named in the tradition include the deacon Florentius and the lector Jucundus. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Nicasius, Eutropia, and their companions on 14 December.

The martyrs were buried in the church Nicasius had founded. In the Middle Ages the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Nicaise at Reims, a major Romanesque and later Gothic house, was closely associated with his relics and memory; the abbey church was largely destroyed after the French Revolution. Nicasius was venerated as a saint from the early Middle Ages without a formal papal canonization of the later type; his cult is therefore pre-congregational. Popular devotion, especially in later centuries, invoked him against smallpox. He was a bishop of a Latin see in Gaul, not a pope or an Eastern patriarch, and no trustworthy source records a spouse or children. Historical scholarship treats the legendary Acta with reserve while acknowledging that the church of Reims preserved from an early date the memory of a bishop-martyr named Nicasius who perished in the invasions of the fifth century.
