Biography

Short Description

Niccolò Albergati was born in 1373 in Bologna, a major university city of north-central Italy, into the noble Albergati family. He received an education suited to his station and, while still a young man, chose the austere life of the Carthusian Order, entering the charterhouse of San Girolamo di Casara near Bologna in the 1390s. The Carthusians combined eremitical solitude with a communal liturgy of great solemnity, and Albergati was noted for fidelity to that observance as well as for learning and prudence. He became prior of his monastery and later served as visitor for the Italian province of the order, which already brought him into contact with other houses and with the wider Church beyond the cloister.

In 1417 Pope Martin V named him bishop of Bologna, an exceptional appointment for a Carthusian, whose rule normally kept members from public ecclesiastical office. Albergati accepted only under obedience and continued to live with marked personal simplicity. As bishop he sought to restore order in a diocese that had suffered from the Western Schism and from local factional strife, promoting clerical discipline and defending the rights of the Church in a city jealous of its communal liberties. On 24 May 1426 Martin V created him cardinal-priest of the title of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Thereafter he was frequently absent from Bologna on papal business, leaving day-to-day government of the see to vicars while remaining its bishop until his death.

Albergati became one of the principal diplomats of the Holy See in the second quarter of the fifteenth century, serving Martin V and then Eugene IV. He acted as legate in negotiations connected with the Hundred Years' War and took part in the Congress of Arras in 1435, which contributed to the reconciliation of Burgundy with France. He was involved in the protracted crisis of the Council of Basel, which had opened in 1431 and later fell into open conflict with the pope. When Eugene IV transferred the council to Ferrara and then to Florence, Albergati supported the papal position; the Council of Florence achieved a short-lived union with the Byzantine Church in 1439. In these years his household was a center of early humanist culture. Tommaso Parentucelli of Sarzana, later Pope Nicholas V, served as his secretary and was formed in part by Albergati's patronage of books and letters. Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, the future Pius II, likewise moved in his circle.

Albergati died at Siena on 9 May 1443 while traveling in the service of the pope. He left a reputation for integrity, asceticism, and skill in negotiation that made him a model of the scholar-diplomat cardinal of the early Renaissance. His likeness is preserved in a celebrated portrait by Jan van Eyck, painted in the early 1430s, and in a drawing associated with Pisanello. Devotion to him grew in Bologna and among the Carthusians. In 1744 Pope Benedict XIV, himself a Bolognese, confirmed the immemorial cult, and the Catholic Church commemorates Blessed Niccolò Albergati on 9 May. He was never raised to the honors of formal canonization, but he remains an important figure in the religious, diplomatic, and cultural history of fifteenth-century Italy.
