Biography

Short Description

Nicetas of Medikion, also called Nicetas the Confessor, was a Byzantine monk and abbot who became a prominent defender of the veneration of icons during the second period of imperial iconoclasm in the early ninth century. He was born in Caesarea of Bithynia, in northwestern Asia Minor, into a Christian family. His father, Philaretos, served in the provincial administration. Nicetas’s mother died while he was still an infant, and he was raised by his grandmother, who gave him a strong religious upbringing. After her death his father wished him to marry and follow a secular career, but Nicetas was drawn instead to the monastic life.

He entered the monastery of Medikion, near the southern shore of the Propontis at the foot of Mount Olympus in Bithynia, and was tonsured by its founder and abbot, Nicephorus. The house followed a cenobitic Byzantine rule. Nicetas was later ordained to the priesthood by Patriarch Tarasius of Constantinople, the hierarch who had presided at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, which restored the cult of icons. When Abbot Nicephorus died, the community elected Nicetas as his successor. Under his direction Medikion grew in numbers and in reputation for discipline and liturgical observance.

When Emperor Leo V the Armenian revived iconoclasm in 815, Nicetas was among the abbots summoned to Constantinople and pressed to accept the new policy and to communicate with the iconoclast patriarch Theodotus I. According to the Life written by his disciple Theosterictus, Nicetas was for a short time induced to enter that communion, an act he soon bitterly regretted. He then publicly reaffirmed the teaching of Nicaea II and the veneration of icons. He was arrested, confined in prisons in the capital, and finally exiled to the island of Glyceria in the Sea of Marmara, where he spent several years under a harsh jailer. Because he suffered for the faith without being put to death, later tradition styled him a Confessor.

After Leo V was assassinated in December 820, the new emperor Michael II released many imprisoned iconophiles, including Nicetas, although Michael himself did not restore the icons. Nicetas did not resume public office. He died on 3 April 824. His body was taken to Medikion and buried there; miracles were later reported at his tomb. He is commemorated on 3 April in Eastern Orthodox synaxaria and in the Roman Martyrology. The principal narrative source remains Theosterictus’s encomiastic biography, which, like other ninth-century monastic vitae, mixes historical report with hagiographical convention. No reliable ancient source records an exact year of birth.
