Biography

Short Description

Nicetas of Novgorod, known in Slavic sources as Nikita, was a monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery and later bishop of Novgorod in Kievan Rus'. He belongs to the generation of monastic and episcopal figures who shaped the church life of the East Slavs in the second half of the eleventh century and the first years of the twelfth. No reliable source preserves a year of birth, and later writers must not be allowed to supply one by confusing his consecration with his nativity. Hagiographical tradition places his early life in or around Kiev, where, while still a young man, he received the monastic tonsure at the Caves Lavra founded by Saints Anthony and Theodosius. The principal narrative of those early years is the Kiev Caves Patericon, a collection of stories about the brethren of that house rather than a chronicle in the strict sense.

According to the Patericon, Nicetas, still inexperienced, asked to live as a recluse. The elders, including the abbot, refused, warning that solitude was profitable only for those already grounded in obedience and communal life, and citing the harm that premature isolation had done to another brother. Nicetas nevertheless shut himself in a cell. A demon then appeared to him in the form of an angel, forbade him to pray, and commanded him to occupy himself only with reading, promising that he would become a great teacher. He memorized the Old Testament and began to speak as a prophet, because the demon whispered hidden things to him; yet he could not endure the New Testament, and especially the Gospels. People came to him as to a seer. The monks of the Caves, recognizing that this was not a divine gift, gathered in prayer. The false angel vanished, and Nicetas was found exhausted and so deprived of his former facility that he had to learn his letters again like a child.

After this humiliation he remained in the monastery in repentance, humility, and obedience, and in time was held to have acquired true spiritual discernment rather than the counterfeit knowledge of his reclusion. In 1096 he was chosen and consecrated bishop of Novgorod, succeeding on the episcopal throne of that northern city after the death of Bishop German. Church tradition portrays his roughly twelve years as bishop as a period of meekness, charity toward the poor, and the building of churches. He is numbered among the wonderworking bishops of Novgorod, though the surviving annalistic notices are brief and do not furnish a detailed itinerary of his acts. He was a celibate monk-bishop of the Eastern Church, never a patriarch of any autocephalous see and never Bishop of Rome or Coptic Pope of Alexandria.

He died in 1108 and was interred in the Cathedral of Holy Wisdom (Saint Sophia) in Novgorod, the principal church of the diocese. In 1558 his relics were uncovered and were described as incorrupt, which strengthened both local and wider veneration in the Russian Orthodox Church. He is commemorated on 31 January, the traditional day of his repose; on 30 April, in memory of the uncovering of the relics; and on 14 May. Little independent chronicle detail survives beyond the dates of his accession and death and the Patericon’s account of his temptation as a recluse; later lives embroider that core story without adding securely dated facts about family, patronage, or a formal act of canonization comparable to a papal decree.
