Biography

Short Description

Nicetas of Remesiana (also Niceta or Niketas) was a Latin-speaking Christian bishop and catechetical writer of the late fourth and early fifth centuries. He held the see of Remesiana (Romatiana), a town in the Roman province of Dacia Mediterranea on the imperial road between Naissus (modern Niš) and Serdica (modern Sofia); the site is identified with present-day Bela Palanka in Serbia. Almost nothing is recorded of his family, education, or the date and place of his birth. He enters the surviving sources already as bishop of this Balkan see and as a friend of Paulinus of Nola, whose poems are the chief contemporary witness to Nicetas’s character and work.

Paulinus of Nola composed verse in honor of Nicetas in connection with the bishop’s visits to Campania, generally placed around 398 and about 400. In Carmen 17 and related poems, Paulinus portrays him as a learned, eloquent, and zealous pastor who had preached among the peoples of Dacia and neighboring regions, including the Bessi of the Thracian interior. The picture is of a bishop on the Danubian frontier, working among both Roman provincials and groups still described as barbarous by Mediterranean writers. Toward the end of the fifth century, Gennadius of Massilia included Nicetas in De viris illustribus and attributed to him several short works of Christian instruction written in a plain style suited to the unlearned.

The writings associated with Nicetas are catechetical and liturgical. Surviving texts or fragments include instruction for those preparing for baptism, a discussion of the titles of Christ (De diversis appellationibus), an explanation of the creed, and treatises on vigils and on the value of psalmody (De psalmodiae bono). They show a pastor concerned with teaching the rudiments of the faith and with hymnody and psalm-singing in worship. A long-standing tradition ascribed to him the Te Deum; modern scholarship does not accept that attribution, but the tradition reflects how strongly later ages linked him with liturgical song and the teaching of converts.

His historical importance lies less in conciliar or doctrinal controversy than in the evidence he provides for Latin Christianity in the central Balkans and for organized missionary work among non-Roman peoples of the region. The Catholic Church commemorates him as a saint; the Roman Martyrology assigns his feast to 22 June, describing him as the bishop who by preaching made wild peoples gentle. Exact years of birth and death are not preserved in contemporary documents. He was active in the closing decades of the fourth century and the opening of the fifth; a conventional death date around 414 is often repeated in modern handbooks, but it remains an approximation. No reliable account of his burial survives. He is not known to have been pope or patriarch, to have belonged to a later religious order, or to have had a documented spouse or children.
