Biography

Short Description

Nicetius of Lyon, known in French as Saint Nizier, was a Gallo-Roman bishop of the sixth century and a leading figure in the church of Lyon. He was born in 513 into a senatorial family: his father Florentinus held senatorial rank and his mother was named Artemia. The family belonged to the Christian aristocracy of Gaul and was closely intertwined with the episcopate. Nicetius’s uncle Sacerdos was bishop of Lyon, and through his sister’s line he was great-uncle to Gregory of Tours, the principal historian of sixth-century Gaul, who later recorded Nicetius’s life, character, and miracles. From youth he was prepared for the clergy and received an education suited to a future churchman in the Gallo-Roman elite.

Ordained priest by his uncle Sacerdos, Nicetius served the church of Lyon until Sacerdos’s death. In 552 Sacerdos died at Paris while attending the court of the Frankish king Childebert I; before dying he recommended Nicetius to the king as his successor. Childebert accepted the nomination, and Nicetius was consecrated bishop of Lyon in 552 or 553. As metropolitan of a major see he worked to restore clerical discipline, protect ecclesiastical rights and property, and correct moral abuses among the laity, especially marriages within forbidden degrees of kinship. Gregory of Tours portrays him as austere, prayerful, and gifted with foresight, and attributes wonders to him during his lifetime.

Nicetius governed Lyon for some two decades amid the shifting politics of the Frankish kingdoms, particularly in Burgundy. He maintained the liturgical and pastoral traditions of his church and was remembered as a defender of ecclesiastical order rather than as a monastic founder or a holder of any later religious order. He died in Lyon on 2 April 573 and was buried in the city’s church of the Holy Apostles, which in later centuries was rededicated in his honour and is known as the Église Saint-Nizier. Pilgrims visited his tomb, and Gregory of Tours described miracles there, which helped establish a lasting local cult.

Veneration of Nicetius arose in the customary manner of late antique Gaul, by popular devotion and episcopal recognition rather than by a later papal process of canonization or beatification. His feast is kept on 2 April, the anniversary of his death. He remains an important witness to the senatorial-episcopal elite that shaped the Merovingian church and to the early medieval history of the diocese of Lyon.
