Biography

Short Description

Blessed Niccolò Albergati (also known as Nicholas Albergati) was an Italian Carthusian monk, bishop, and cardinal who became one of the leading papal diplomats of the first half of the fifteenth century. He was born in Bologna, in north-central Italy, into a family of the local nobility. After studies in law at the University of Bologna, he entered the Carthusian monastery of San Girolamo di Casara, near his native city, in the mid-1390s. The Carthusian Order, founded by Saint Bruno, combined eremitical solitude with a measure of community life, and Albergati embraced its strict observance. He served as prior of several Carthusian houses, among them foundations connected with Bologna, Florence, and the region of Siena, and he acquired a reputation for prudence, charity, and personal austerity.

In 1417 Pope Martin V appointed him Bishop of Bologna. Albergati, consistent with Carthusian custom, was reluctant to leave the cloister for the episcopal office and accepted only under papal command. He was a reforming bishop who sought to restore discipline among clergy and religious while remaining personally attached to monastic simplicity. In 1426 Martin V raised him to the cardinalate as cardinal priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. From that time onward he was frequently absent from Bologna on missions for the Holy See. He served Martin V and, after 1431, Pope Eugene IV as legate in Germany, France, and Italy. His assignments included efforts to deal with the Hussite movement in Bohemia, to promote peace among the Christian powers during the later phases of the Hundred Years' War, and to manage relations with the Council of Basel.

Albergati was a firm supporter of papal authority in the conflict between Eugene IV and the conciliarist majority at Basel. He took part in the complex negotiations that led to the transfer of the council to Ferrara and then to Florence, and he contributed to the discussions that produced the decree of union with the Greek Church in 1439. Although that union proved fragile, it marked a high point of fifteenth-century papal diplomacy. In his household Albergati gathered able secretaries and scholars. Tommaso Parentucelli of Sarzana, who later reigned as Pope Nicholas V, was among his closest collaborators and owed much of his early advancement to the cardinal. Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II, also served him. The cardinal's features were recorded by the painter Jan van Eyck in a celebrated portrait executed in the early 1430s, now among the treasures of early Netherlandish painting.

Throughout his public career Albergati retained the habits of a Carthusian: modest dress, frugal diet, and a life of prayer. He was esteemed by contemporaries as a man of integrity in an age of political and ecclesiastical turmoil. He died at Siena on 9 May 1443 while traveling in the service of the pope. A cult developed around his memory, especially among Carthusians and in Bologna. In 1744 Pope Benedict XIV confirmed this cult, thereby beatifying him. Blessed Niccolò Albergati is commemorated on 9 May. His life stands at the meeting point of late medieval monasticism, the diplomacy of the Renaissance papacy, and the patronage of early humanism.
