Biography

Short Description

Nicholas Bùi Đức Thể, known in Vietnamese as Nicôla Bùi Đức Thể, was a Catholic layman and soldier of the Nguyễn imperial army who was put to death for his Christian faith in northern Vietnam during the nineteenth-century persecutions. He belongs to the group of one hundred and seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam (also called the Martyrs of Annam, or the Martyrs of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina) who were canonized together by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988. Surviving hagiographical notices, drawn from missionary records and later Vietnamese Catholic compilations, identify his birthplace as the village of Quần Anh Hạ in the present-day Giao Thủy District of Nam Định Province, in the Red River Delta, and assign his birth to the year 1792.

Little is recorded of his early life beyond his occupation as a soldier and his adherence to the Catholic Church, which had taken root in Tonkin since the seventeenth century through the work of Jesuit, Dominican, and Paris Foreign Missions Society clergy. Under Emperor Minh Mạng (r. 1820–1841), the court issued a series of edicts that branded Christianity a perverse foreign doctrine, forbade its practice, and required suspected Christians to apostatize by trampling on a crucifix. Nam Định and the surrounding delta provinces, where Catholic communities were numerous, became centers of arrest and interrogation. Nicholas refused to recant.

Church tradition holds that he was seized, confined, and tortured according to the methods then in use—beatings, the wooden cangue, and other pressures designed to obtain a public denial of the faith. He persisted in confessing Christ. Condemned to capital punishment, he was beheaded at an execution ground in Nam Định. Hagiographical sources date the martyrdom to 12 June 1839. As with many of the Vietnamese martyrs of this period, the precise location of his burial is not preserved in the available records.

The memory of Nicholas Bùi Đức Thể was kept by local Catholic communities and by the missionary societies that documented the persecutions for the Holy See. His cause was included among those of the Vietnamese martyrs that proceeded through the processes of beatification in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries and culminated in the collective canonization of 1988. In the liturgy of the Roman Rite the one hundred and seventeen martyrs are commemorated together on 24 November. Independent evidence concerning whether Nicholas was married or had children has not come down in the sources that treat his martyrdom, which emphasize his status as a soldier and his fidelity unto death.
