Biography

Short Description

Nicholas Charnetsky, also known as Mykola Charnetskyi, was a Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishop and member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. He was born on 14 December 1884 in the village of Semakivtsi in eastern Galicia, then a province of Austria-Hungary and now in Ukraine. Raised in a Greek Catholic family, he studied for the priesthood at the seminary in Stanislaviv and later in Rome. He was ordained a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in 1909. In the following years he served as a seminary professor and spiritual formator in Galicia, teaching theology and assisting in the training of clergy.

Drawn to the missionary spirituality of the Redemptorists, who had begun work among Ukrainian Catholics, he entered the congregation in 1919. As a Redemptorist he undertook missionary preaching and pastoral work, especially in Volhynia, a region of mixed Catholic and Orthodox population. His ministry emphasized catechesis, popular missions, and efforts toward the reunion of Orthodox Ukrainians with the Catholic Church, in keeping with both Redemptorist tradition and the pastoral concerns of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the early twentieth century.

In 1931 Pope Pius XI appointed him Apostolic Visitor for Ukrainian Greek Catholics in Volhynia and neighboring territories then under Polish administration, and he was consecrated a bishop that same year, with the titular see of Lebedus. In this office he worked to organize church life, support clergy and faithful, and sustain the Eastern Catholic identity of his flock amid political tensions involving Polish authorities, Ukrainian national life, and Orthodox jurisdictions. Successive occupations of the region during the Second World War—Soviet, German, and again Soviet—placed his ministry under severe constraint.

After the Soviet Union reimposed control over western Ukraine, Charnetsky was arrested by the NKVD in 1945 during the campaign to suppress the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and force its members into the Russian Orthodox Church. He was sentenced to imprisonment and spent about eleven years in Soviet prisons and labor camps, enduring interrogation, forced labor, and collapsing health. Released in 1956 because of illness, he returned to Lviv and lived under police surveillance, unable to exercise public episcopal ministry. He died in Lviv on 2 April 1959.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 27 June 2001 in Lviv, together with a group of other Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople who had died as a result of Soviet persecution. The Catholic Church venerates him as Blessed Nicholas Charnetsky, a martyr of the twentieth century. His memory is observed on 2 April, the anniversary of his death, and he is also commemorated with the other Ukrainian martyrs of that beatification.
