Biography

Short Description

Nicholas of Flüe, known in German as Niklaus von Flüe and popularly as Brother Klaus (Bruder Klaus), was born in 1417 in the hamlet of Flüeli in the alpine canton of Obwalden, then Unterwalden within the Old Swiss Confederacy. He belonged to a family of prosperous peasant landowners. In youth and early adulthood he took part in the military affairs of the Confederacy, serving as a soldier and later as a captain in mid-fifteenth-century campaigns, including those connected with the Old Zürich War. He also held civic office as a councillor and judge and was offered the post of landamman, the canton’s chief magistrate, which he declined. Even in these years of public and military activity he was noted for serious piety and a habit of nocturnal prayer.

In the 1440s he married Dorothea Wyss of nearby Sachseln. The couple had ten children, five sons and five daughters, and Nicholas continued to farm successfully. After some twenty years of married life, around 1467, he believed himself called to solitude. With his wife’s consent he left the household, intending at first to go farther afield. A visionary experience—accounts speak of a heavenly sign or of an encounter that turned him homeward—led him to settle instead in a secluded gorge called the Ranft, only a short distance from his family. There he occupied a simple cell; a chapel was later built beside it. From that time until his death he lived as a hermit in a grey-brown robe and became known as Bruder Klaus. He was not a member of a canonical religious order, though he stood in the broader late-medieval current of lay mysticism associated with the Friends of God.

His eremitical life drew wide attention, in part because of the claim, examined by ecclesiastical and civic authorities during his lifetime, that for nearly two decades he took no food other than the Eucharist. Pilgrims, peasants, and persons of rank came to the Ranft for spiritual counsel. Nicholas was regarded as a mystic whose visions and brief, often enigmatic sayings carried weight. In 1481, when the Swiss Confederacy was threatened with internal rupture at the Diet of Stans—urban and rural cantons standing on the brink of armed conflict—the parish priest Heiny am Grund sought the hermit’s advice. The message Nicholas sent is credited with helping to produce the Compromise of Stans, which preserved the union of the cantons. He thus entered Swiss historical memory not only as a holy man but as a peacemaker at a decisive political moment.

Nicholas died in his cell on 21 March 1487 and was buried in the parish church of Sachseln, where his relics remain. Veneration began almost at once. He was beatified in 1669 by Pope Clement IX and canonized on 15 May 1947 by Pope Pius XII. He is the principal patron saint of Switzerland and of the Pontifical Swiss Guard; his feast is kept on 21 March in the general calendar and on 25 September in Switzerland and Germany. The former hermitage in the Ranft and the church at Sachseln remain places of pilgrimage. Devotion to Brother Klaus has long been bound up with Swiss national and religious identity, and his example as a layman, husband, father, soldier, magistrate, and finally hermit has been invoked across a wide range of spiritual and civic contexts.
