Biography

Short Description

Nicola Riezzo was an Italian Roman Catholic prelate of the twentieth century, known chiefly as Bishop of Castellaneta and later Archbishop of Otranto. He was born on 2 December 1904 in Squinzano, a town in the province of Lecce in Apulia, southern Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. The Salento peninsula in which he grew up combined Latin Catholic practice with older Greek-rite memories and a strong local parish culture. After ecclesiastical studies he was ordained a priest on 21 August 1927. For more than thirty years he served as a diocesan (secular) priest rather than as a member of a religious order; published sources do not record a detailed account of his early pastoral assignments, but they consistently present him as a priest of the Lecce region before his elevation to the episcopate.

On 25 March 1958 he was appointed Bishop of Castellaneta, a suffragan see in the province of Taranto. He received episcopal consecration on 29 June 1958. His years at Castellaneta coincided with the close of the pontificate of Pius XII and the opening of the Second Vatican Council. As a residential bishop he took part in the Council (1962–1965) as a council father. The published record of his Castellaneta period is largely official: appointment, consecration, and conciliar attendance, rather than a full spiritual biography or a corpus of theological writings.

Pope Paul VI transferred him to the metropolitan Archdiocese of Otranto on 28 April 1969. Otranto is an ancient see on the Adriatic coast of Apulia, historically associated with the martyrs of 1480 and with the meeting of Latin and Byzantine worlds. Riezzo governed that archdiocese until 27 January 1981, when he resigned after reaching the canonical age limit. His episcopate therefore covered the first phase of implementing conciliar liturgical, pastoral, and institutional reforms in a largely rural and coastal southern Italian setting. After retirement he returned to his native Squinzano, where he lived in relative simplicity among the people of his hometown.

He died in Squinzano on 20 August 1998 at the age of ninety-three. In the years after his death the local Church developed a reputation for his holiness and opened a diocesan cause for beatification; he is therefore sometimes referred to as a Servant of God, though he has not been beatified or canonized by the Holy See. Surviving notices emphasize pastoral humility and closeness to ordinary faithful more than curial career or published scholarship. Historical documentation remains limited mainly to hierarchical fasti, council lists, and regional commemorations; a comprehensive critical biography based on private papers has not become a standard reference. He belongs to the ranks of twentieth-century Italian residential bishops whose memory is primarily diocesan and regional rather than universal.
