Biography

Short Description

Saint Nicomedes is a Roman priest and martyr whose life is known almost entirely from later liturgical and legendary sources rather than from contemporary records. He is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 15 September as a priest who suffered at Rome and was buried on the Via Nomentana. Beyond that core of cultic memory—his name, clerical status, martyrdom in the city, and tomb on that road—virtually nothing can be verified. No reliable evidence survives for his birth, family, or the emperor under whom he died, and modern hagiographers therefore treat the precise century of his passion as uncertain, placing it only in broad terms within the age of the Roman persecutions.

Later legendary acts supplied a fuller story that connected him with other Roman saints. In that narrative Nicomedes was the priest who recovered and buried the body of the martyr Felicula, associated in the same cycle with Saint Petronilla. Arrested for this burial and ordered to sacrifice to the gods, he refused, and was beaten to death with leaded scourges. A related martyrological notice speaks of his body being pierced with a sword, thrown into the Tiber, and afterwards found by a priest named Justus, who buried it in a garden on the Via Nomentana. These episodes belong to the common stock of Roman martyr legends and are not accepted as historical in detail; they do, however, explain why later tradition remembered him specifically as a priest who honoured the bodies of the martyrs.

The topographic evidence for his cult is firmer than the Passio. Early pilgrim itineraries of the graves of the Roman martyrs mention the cemetery of Nicomedes on the Via Nomentana, near the gate of that name. A basilica dedicated to him on that road is recorded in the Liber Pontificalis as having been restored by Pope Boniface V in the early seventh century. Portions of relics attributed to him were later translated, and his name appears in medieval Roman tituli and in some churches north of the Alps. The principal feast remained 15 September; a secondary commemoration linked to the dedication of his church was sometimes kept on 1 June.

Nicomedes was never Bishop of Rome or patriarch of any Eastern see, and he belonged to no later religious order. Whether he was married or had children is unrecorded, as is any distinctive list of patronages. His standing in the calendar rests on the ancient Roman cult of a priest-martyr whose tomb lay on the Via Nomentana, not on a recoverable biography. The persistence of that cult, rather than the legendary acts, is the chief historical fact that can be stated with confidence.
