Biography

Short Description

Saint Nikita the Stylite, also known as Nikita of Pereyaslavl, was a twelfth-century Russian Orthodox monastic saint associated with the city of Pereyaslavl-Zalessky in northeastern Rus'. Hagiographical tradition identifies him as a native of that city who in his earlier life served as a tax collector. In that capacity he acquired a reputation for greed and cruelty, extracting wealth from the populace by harsh and unjust methods.

According to his Life, a moment of conversion occurred when Nikita entered a church and heard the reading from the Book of Isaiah calling the people to wash themselves and put away evil. Deeply convicted, he did not return to his former occupation. Instead he distributed his possessions and presented himself at the monastery of the Great Martyr Nikita, situated near Lake Pleshcheyevo. After a period of testing he was received as a monk. He then adopted an exceptionally austere rule of life, wearing heavy iron chains and a metal helmet, and excavating a well by his own labor.

Later Nikita withdrew into a stylite enclosure, a narrow stone cell resembling a pillar, where he remained in prayer and fasting. He became known as a wonderworker, particularly for the healing of those suffering from demonic affliction, paralysis, and other grave illnesses. People of various ranks sought his prayers. In 1186 robbers, mistaking his iron chains for silver, murdered him. His relics were subsequently found incorrupt and became an object of veneration at the Nikitsky Monastery, which continues to this day as a monastic community and pilgrimage site.

Saint Nikita is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on 24 May. His cult developed locally in the Pereyaslavl region and was later received more widely in the Russian Orthodox tradition. Precise details of his birth and family background remain unknown, as is common with many medieval monastic saints whose Lives focus on conversion and ascetic struggle rather than earlier biography.
