Biography

Short Description

Metropolitan Nikodim (secular name Boris Georgiyevich Rotov) was a leading hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Soviet period. He was born on 15 October 1929 in the village of Frolovo in the Ryazan region. Despite the officially atheist climate of the Stalinist and postwar Soviet Union, he was drawn to church life as a teenager and entered ecclesiastical service while still young. In 1947, at the age of eighteen, he received monastic tonsure with the name Nikodim and was ordained deacon and priest. He studied at the Leningrad theological schools and completed his academy course in the mid-1950s, after pastoral work in the Yaroslavl diocese.

His subsequent career was unusually rapid. In the later 1950s he served at the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. In 1960 he was consecrated bishop and appointed chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department of External Church Relations, succeeding Metropolitan Nikolai (Yarushevich) in a post of great political sensitivity. In 1963 he was made a metropolitan and assigned to the see of Leningrad and Ladoga (later Leningrad and Novgorod), one of the principal dioceses of the Russian Church, which he retained until his death. He continued to shape the Church’s foreign relations for years after leaving the formal chairmanship of the external department.

Nikodim was the chief architect of the Russian Orthodox Church’s international and ecumenical activity in the 1960s and 1970s. He guided the Church’s involvement in the World Council of Churches, later serving as a WCC president, and pursued contacts with the Roman Catholic Church, including repeated visits to Rome and meetings with Pope Paul VI. These initiatives unfolded while religious life inside the Soviet Union remained tightly restricted, and they have been read variously as pastoral outreach, diplomatic necessity under state pressure, or alignment with Soviet foreign-policy aims. Among the clergy he ordained and formed was Kirill (Gundyaev), later Patriarch of Moscow.

He had suffered from heart disease for several years. On 5 September 1978, during a private audience in the Vatican with the newly elected Pope John Paul I, he collapsed and died of a heart attack at the age of forty-eight. His body was returned to Leningrad and buried at the Nikolskoye Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. He was never patriarch, was not canonized, and remains a controversial figure in assessments of church–state relations in the late Soviet era, but his institutional imprint on the Russian Church’s external posture and on a generation of its bishops is well documented.
