Biography

Short Description

Nikola Tavelić (also known as Nicholas Tavelic) and his companions Deodatus of Rodez, Peter of Narbonne, and Stephen of Cuneo were four friars of the Order of Friars Minor put to death in Jerusalem in 1391 after publicly preaching Christianity to Muslims. Tavelić is traditionally identified as a native of Šibenik in Dalmatia, then in the Kingdom of Croatia in union with Hungary; his companions came respectively from Rodez in southern France, from Narbonne, and from Cuneo in Piedmont. All four belonged to the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, which in the fourteenth century served Latin pilgrims and maintained Catholic worship at certain holy sites under Mamluk rule. They resided at the Franciscan convent on Mount Zion. Later Franciscan tradition holds that Tavelić had earlier preached in Bosnia, but the securely attested chapter of their lives is their service in Jerusalem in the last years of that century.

On 11 November 1391 the four went into a mosque in Jerusalem and addressed those present, proclaiming the Christian faith and urging conversion. They were arrested at once and brought before a Muslim judge. Franciscan testimony preserved in the tradition of the Custody of the Holy Land states that they were held for three days and pressed to recant and accept Islam. All four refused. On 14 November 1391 they were condemned and executed. Hagiographical accounts describe death by the sword and the subsequent burning of the bodies, a measure that would have hindered the recovery of relics. No securely identified tomb is known; devotion attached to their memory rather than to a grave. Independent Mamluk records of the trial are not cited in standard accounts, so the narrative of the interrogation remains that of the Christian sources.

The late fourteenth century was a period of Mamluk control of Palestine, during which the Franciscans occupied a legally recognized but restricted position as the Latin clergy of the holy places. Open preaching to Muslims was forbidden and was understood as a capital challenge under Islamic law. The decision to preach inside a mosque was therefore a deliberate public witness. Their deaths belong to a small group of late-medieval Franciscan martyrdoms in the eastern Mediterranean that the order recorded as examples of missionary zeal. News of the event spread through Franciscan networks and among Croatian Catholics, for whom Tavelić became a figure of both religious and national significance, especially in Dalmatia.

Pope Leo XIII beatified Nikola Tavelić and his companions on 6 June 1889. After further examination of the cause, Pope Paul VI canonized them together on 21 June 1970 in Rome. Tavelić thereby became the first Croatian to be canonized in the modern papal process. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 14 November. In Croatian Catholic life Tavelić is invoked as a patron of the nation and of Šibenik, and the four are commemorated as Franciscan missionaries and martyrs of the Holy Land.
