Biography

Short Description

Nikolaus Groß was born on 30 September 1898 in Niederwenigern, a Catholic mining village in the Ruhr district of western Germany, then in the Prussian Province of Westphalia. He grew up in a working-class family and left school in his early teens to work underground in the coal mines. That experience, together with the social teaching of the Catholic Church, formed his lifelong concern for the dignity of industrial labour. He joined the Christian Miners’ Union and Catholic workers’ associations and, still a young man, became a union secretary. On 24 May 1923 he married Elisabeth Koch; they had seven children. Groß remained a married layman throughout his life and never entered a religious order. His public work stood in the German Catholic social tradition associated with Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler and with the Christian trade-union movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

From 1927 he served in Cologne as editor of the Westdeutsche Arbeiterzeitung, the newspaper of the Catholic workers’ movement in western Germany, later appearing under the title Kettelerwacht. In that role he promoted Christian social principles, independent unions, and the rights of workers, and after 1933 he used the paper to oppose National Socialist ideology and the regime’s assault on the Church, on free associations, and on human dignity. The newspaper was repeatedly censored and was finally banned in 1938. Groß continued to write for other Catholic publications and to keep contact with Christian trade unionists and former Centre Party circles who rejected the dictatorship. He was not a conspirator in the military plot of 20 July 1944, but he belonged to the wider Catholic and conservative opposition in the Rhineland, including figures associated with the Cologne circle.

The Gestapo arrested him on 12 August 1944. He was held at Ravensbrück and then in Berlin. On 15 January 1945 the People’s Court, presided over by Roland Freisler, condemned him to death on charges of high treason. He was hanged at Plötzensee Prison in Berlin on 23 January 1945. As was customary for those executed there, his body was not released to the family; it was taken for cremation and the ashes were not given a known grave. Letters written in prison express his faith, his concern for his wife and children, and his refusal to separate conscience from political responsibility.

Pope John Paul II beatified Nikolaus Groß on 7 October 2001 during a liturgy in Berlin, recognising him as a martyr who had died for the faith. His liturgical memorial is kept on 23 January. He is remembered in Germany as a lay Catholic journalist and trade unionist who resisted totalitarianism from the standpoint of Catholic social doctrine, and as a husband and father whose witness was inseparable from ordinary family life. Memorials stand in Niederwenigern and Cologne and at the former prison of Plötzensee.
