Biography

Short Description

Saint Nilus of Sinai, also called Nilus the Elder, Nilus of Ancyra, Nilus of Constantinople, and Nilus the Ascetic, was a Greek Christian monk, spiritual writer, and saint of the late fourth and early fifth centuries. The name under which he is most often commemorated in Eastern and Western calendars reflects a long tradition that associated him with the monastic settlements of Mount Sinai. At the same time, a large body of letters and treatises is more securely connected with an abbot who directed a monastery in the countryside near Ancyra in Galatia. Historians therefore treat the biographical dossier with caution. Medieval copyists and later hagiographers appear to have blended an Ancyra abbot with a Sinai hermit, and a narrative of a barbarian raid on Sinai transmitted under Nilus’s name is widely regarded as a separate work of uncertain date. What can be said with confidence is that a prominent Greek ascetical author of this name flourished in the Eastern Roman Empire in the decades around the year 400, and that the churches have honoured him as a saint since late antiquity.

The traditional Life, still followed in many Orthodox synaxaria and in older Catholic reference works, presents Nilus as a member of a distinguished Constantinopolitan family who rose to the office of prefect of the imperial capital under Theodosius I. He is said to have been married and to have had two children, a son named Theodulus and a daughter. Drawn to the ascetic ideal and counted among the disciples and defenders of Saint John Chrysostom, he eventually left public office. In this account he entrusted his wife and daughter to a convent in Egypt and withdrew with Theodulus to Mount Sinai, where he lived as a hermit and monk. The Narrations ascribed to him tell of an attack on the Sinai lavra by raiders, the slaughter of monks, the captivity of Theodulus, and the father’s long search, which ended when the young man was found alive after having been sold into slavery. Because this Sinai cycle cannot be corroborated and conflicts with the Ancyra evidence, modern patristic scholarship generally declines to use it as a factual autobiography, while acknowledging its importance for the saint’s cult and for later imagination of Sinai monasticism.

The historical figure usually identified as Nilus of Ancyra was abbot of a monastery near Ancyra (present-day Ankara) in Galatia. His extensive correspondence, of which hundreds of letters survive in whole or in part, shows a spiritual father advising bishops, monks, civil officials, and laypeople on prayer, repentance, almsgiving, and the avoidance of heresy and pagan practice. Treatises attributed to him include a work on prayer (sometimes associated with the Evagrian tradition and of debated authorship), writings on the monastic state and on voluntary poverty, a commentary on the Song of Songs, and a polemic against the pagan writer Hierocles. He wrote in the tradition of the desert fathers and of John Chrysostom, whose deposition and exile he opposed. The letters reveal a monk in contact with the ecclesiastical politics of Constantinople and Asia Minor rather than a recluse isolated on the Sinai peninsula. Authorship of individual items in the large Nilus corpus remains a matter of specialist debate, and some texts once ascribed to him are now given to other hands, but the core of the Ancyra correspondence is accepted as genuine.

Nilus is generally held to have died about the year 430. No contemporary source records the exact place of his death or burial, whether near Ancyra or elsewhere. Veneration of him as a holy monk and teacher of the spiritual life is ancient in the Byzantine church; he was later included in the Roman Martyrology. His principal feast day is 12 November. He was never a bishop, patriarch, or pope. Because the year and place of his birth are not preserved in any early independent witness, they cannot be stated with certainty, nor can a specific list of patronages be documented from historical sources. His lasting importance lies in the ascetical literature transmitted under his name and in his place, however composite the portrait, among the monastic fathers of the early fifth-century Christian East.
