Biography

Short Description

Nimatullah Youssef Kassab Al-Hardini was born Youssef Kassab in 1808 in the village of Hardine in northern Lebanon, then under Ottoman rule in Mount Lebanon. He was the son of George Kassab and Mariam Raad, a devout Maronite Catholic family. Formed in a region with a long monastic tradition, he received his early schooling at the monastery of Saints Cyprian and Justina in Kfifan, where he was introduced to Maronite liturgy, Scripture, and the ascetic customs of the Lebanese mountains. In 1828 he entered the Lebanese Maronite Order at the Monastery of Saint Anthony in Qozhaya in the Qadisha Valley and took the religious name Nimatullah, an Arabic name meaning Grace of God. He is commonly called Al-Hardini after his birthplace.

After his novitiate and studies he was ordained a priest in 1833. He spent much of his subsequent life at Kfifan as a teacher of moral theology and as a formator of younger monks. Among those who studied in that community during his years there was the future Saint Charbel Makhlouf. Nimatullah combined classroom work with a hidden life of prayer. Contemporary accounts and later hagiography stress his devotion to the Eucharist and to the Virgin Mary, long hours of nocturnal adoration, and a reputation for patience, silence, and fidelity to the monastic rule. He was elected Assistant General of the Lebanese Maronite Order more than once, but he declined higher office and preferred teaching, spiritual direction, and ordinary conventual duties.

He lived through a restless period in Mount Lebanon, including the communal tensions of the mid-nineteenth century, and was remembered among his brethren as a man of peace who urged observance rather than faction. He suffered recurring illness, including stomach ailments, which he accepted as part of his ascetic life. Nimatullah died on 14 December 1858 at the monastery of Kfifan. A popular cult grew around his tomb; his remains were later reported to have been found incorrupt and are still venerated at the monastery church of Saints Cyprian and Justina.

The cause for his canonization was taken up in the twentieth century. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 10 May 1998 and canonized him on 16 May 2004. His feast is kept on 14 December. He is one of the principal modern saints of the Maronite Church, remembered as a teacher-monk of the Lebanese Maronite Order rather than as a bishop or public prelate, and his shrine at Kfifan remains a place of pilgrimage in northern Lebanon.
