Biography

Short Description

Niña Ruiz Abad was a Filipino Catholic girl of the late twentieth century whose reputation for holiness later led the Diocese of Sorsogon to open a cause for her beatification and canonization. She was born on 31 October 1979 in Quezon City, in the Philippines, to attorney Fernando Abad and Elena Ruiz Abad, and was raised in a devout Catholic household. The family subsequently settled in Sorsogon in the Bicol region, where much of her short life was spent and where popular devotion to her would later become concentrated. She remained a lay child throughout her life and never entered a religious institute, married, or had children.

From early childhood she was remembered for an unusual depth of piety. Accounts from those who knew her describe a strong devotion to the Eucharist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, frequent attendance at Mass, and regular recitation of the rosary. She distributed rosaries, holy cards, and religious images among classmates and acquaintances and spoke in simple terms of her desire to be with Jesus and to go to heaven. She is also remembered as having encouraged others in the practice of the faith and as having offered her own sufferings for the conversion of sinners. Witnesses recalled a cheerful disposition even while she lived with serious illness.

Niña suffered from a cardiac tumor that progressively weakened her. Despite physical frailty she continued her religious practices as far as her health allowed. She died on 16 August 1993 at the age of thirteen, in Sorsogon City. After her death, reports of favors attributed to her intercession circulated especially in Sorsogon, and her burial place became a site of local prayer and pilgrimage. Philippine Catholic media have often presented her as an example of childhood holiness centered on the Eucharist and on patient endurance of illness.

In the early twenty-first century the Diocese of Sorsogon took up investigation of her life and reputation for holiness. She is honored with the title Servant of God, the first formal stage in the Catholic Church’s process for a candidate for sainthood. She has not been beatified or canonized, and the Church has not assigned her an official feast day or patronages. No definitive judgment on heroic virtue or on alleged miracles had been issued in the public record of her cause as of the most widely reported stages of the process. Her story remains that of a lay Filipino child whose brief life and reported piety became the focus of diocesan inquiry and popular devotion in Bicol and beyond.
