Biography

Short Description

Saint Ninnidh, known in Irish as Ninnidh Láimhdhearg (Ninnidh of the Red Hand), was a sixth-century Irish monastic founder traditionally numbered among the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Medieval Irish tradition, preserved in the Lives of the saints and in later martyrologies, presents him as a disciple of Saint Finnian at the monastic school of Clonard in the Irish midlands. Like the other figures grouped as the apostles of Clonard, he is said to have received his formation there before establishing his own church in the north-west. The sources for his life are late, fragmentary, and hagiographical rather than contemporary. No annalistic obit that historians treat as certain has been established, and neither a year of birth nor a year of death is recorded in a reliable early chronicle. Conventional dates sometimes repeated in older devotional works (for example a death around 530) are not anchored in early evidence and should not be treated as verified.

Ninnidh's principal foundation was the monastery of Inis Muighe Samh, later called Inishmacsaint, an island in Lower Lough Erne in what is now County Fermanagh. The island church became the centre of a medieval parish that retained his name and cult. A high cross and ecclesiastical remains on Inishmacsaint, of later date than the sixth century, mark the site associated with his monastery. Local tradition also connects him with Knockninny (Cnoc Ninnidh, Ninnidh's hill) on the southern shore of Upper Lough Erne, where a church or hermitage is said to have stood. From these bases he is credited with missionary and pastoral work among the peoples of the Erne basin. Whether he held episcopal rank is not securely attested: some later notices style him a bishop, which is how the Martyrology of Donegal describes Ninnidh of Inis-Muighe-Samh, but the early Irish evidence is equally consistent with the role of an abbot-founder of the type common in the sixth-century Irish church. He belonged to the independent monastic Christianity of early Ireland rather than to any later named religious order.

A separate strand of tradition, found in the hagiography of Saint Brigid of Kildare, identifies a saint named Ninnidh as the priest summoned to administer Viaticum to Brigid at her death (placed by tradition in the mid-520s). On account of that act he was called Ninnidh Láimhiodhan, Ninnidh of the Pure Hand, the hand that had given the sacrament being regarded as blessed. Medieval and modern writers have often equated this figure with Ninnidh of Inishmacsaint and with Ninnidh Láimhdhearg, but the identification is not beyond dispute. The epithets Láimhdhearg (red-handed) and Láimhiodhan (pure-handed) may reflect distinct traditions or a later conflation of similarly named saints. Genealogies that attach Ninnidh to particular northern dynasties, including claims of noble ancestry, belong to the conventional apparatus of Irish saint's Lives and cannot be verified independently. There is no reliable record of a spouse or children; the tradition presents him as a monastic.

Ninnidh's feast is entered at 18 January in the principal Irish martyrologies, including the Martyrology of Gorman and the Martyrology of Donegal. His cult remained local, centred on Inishmacsaint and the surrounding parish, rather than becoming a national devotion. He was not the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; like other early Irish saints he was honoured by popular and diocesan cultus from an early period. Little else about his personal life, precise place of origin, or the circumstances of his death and burial can be recovered from sources that meet a historical standard. The surviving picture is that of a sixth-century monastic founder of the Erne region, remembered as a pupil of Clonard, a possible attendant of Brigid, and the patron of Inishmacsaint.
