Biography

Short Description

Nivard of Clairvaux was the youngest of the six sons of Tescelin, called Sorus or the Red, a Burgundian knight whose seat was the castle of Fontaines near Dijon, and of Aleth of Montbard. He belonged to the same household that produced his brother Bernard, later abbot of Clairvaux, together with Guy, Gerard, Andrew, and Bartholomew, and their sister Humbeline. The family formed part of the lesser nobility of the Duchy of Burgundy in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. Early Cistercian biography, above all the Vita Prima of Bernard, remembers Aleth for her piety and for the religious formation she gave her children; she died while Nivard was still young, after which the sons were raised in a knightly household until Bernard’s conversion reshaped the family’s course.

When Bernard, in the early 1110s, determined to enter the New Monastery at Cîteaux and drew with him a large company of kinsmen and friends, Nivard was still a boy and was left at Fontaines as heir to the family estates. The Vita Prima records a well-known exchange: the departing brothers told the child that the earthly inheritance would be his; Nivard answered that they had taken heaven for themselves and left him only the earth, and that such a division was unjust. Not long afterward he too abandoned secular life and followed his brothers into the Cistercian Order. After the foundation of Clairvaux in 1115 he lived as a monk of that house under Bernard’s abbacy.

Twelfth-century sources that treat the family of Fontaines give Nivard only passing mention. He did not hold the prominent offices associated with Gerard, cellarer of Clairvaux, or with Guy, who had been married before entering religion. Later Cistercian tradition numbered him among the blessed of the order and remembered him as the youngest brother who completed the family’s passage from knighthood to the cloister. No contemporary chronicle supplies a verified year of birth or of death, nor a secure place of burial, and he does not appear to have been the subject of a medieval papal canonization.

The historical Nivard is therefore known almost entirely through the hagiography of Bernard of Clairvaux. His life illustrates the collective character of the Fontaines conversion, in which an entire knightly sibling group entered Cîteaux and Clairvaux in the second decade of the twelfth century and helped to staff the early Cistercian expansion. Modern historians accept the basic outline of kinship, youth at the time of Bernard’s entry, and subsequent profession as a Cistercian monk of Clairvaux, while treating anecdotal material in the Vita Prima with the caution due to monastic biography.
