Biography
Numidicus was a Christian confessor and later a priest of the Church of Carthage in Roman North Africa during the mid-third century. He is known almost exclusively from the letters of Saint Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, who described his sufferings in the persecution initiated by the emperor Decius. In 250 Decius issued an edict requiring inhabitants of the empire to sacrifice to the traditional gods and obtain a certificate of compliance. Those who refused faced imprisonment, torture, and death. Numidicus was among the Christians at Carthage who would not comply.
According to Cyprian, Numidicus endured torture of such severity that his persecutors believed him dead. His body was cast onto a pile of corpses of those who had already been killed for the faith. His daughter, searching among the dead for her father, discovered that he was still breathing. She removed him from the heap of bodies and tended his wounds until he recovered. The sources do not name the daughter, nor do they record the name of Numidicus's wife, but the episode attests that he had at least one child and that members of his family remained faithful during the crisis.
After Numidicus had regained his strength, Cyprian judged him worthy of the priesthood. In a letter addressed to the clergy and people of Carthage, the bishop announced that he had ordained Numidicus a presbyter. Cyprian argued that a man who had already borne a glorious confession, who had been all but martyred, and whom God had restored to life, possessed a priestly crown by his very witness and was therefore a fitting minister for the church. The letter presents the ordination as both a recognition of Numidicus's proven faith and a pastoral provision for a community depleted and traumatized by persecution.
Beyond this episode, the historical record is silent. The date and place of Numidicus's death are unknown; he is not recorded as having died in the Decian persecution itself, since he survived to be ordained. Later martyrologies, including the Roman Martyrology, commemorate him on 9 August as a priest of Carthage. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic tradition, though no formal process of canonization in the later medieval or modern sense is recorded, his cult belonging to the ancient, pre-congregational veneration of early confessors. No specific patronages are attached to his name in the standard directories of saints. The brevity of the sources leaves his origins, the remainder of his ministry, and the circumstances of his death unrecoverable; what remains is the portrait of a North African Christian whose near-martyrdom and subsequent priesthood were held up by Cyprian as an example to the church of Carthage.
