Biography

Short Description

Saint Odile of Alsace, also known as Odilia or Ottilia, is the patron saint of Alsace and a central figure of early medieval monasticism in the Vosges. According to the principal hagiographical source, a Life composed in the tenth century, she was the daughter of Adalric (also called Eticho or Adalrich), duke of Alsace and progenitor of the Etichonid lineage, and of his wife Berswinda. Tradition places her birth at Obernai (Oberehnheim) in the Nordgau during the later seventh century, often given approximately as the 660s. The same legend states that she was born blind. Her father, regarding the disability as a disgrace to his house, is said to have ordered the infant put to death. Her mother instead had the child hidden and later placed in a monastery, frequently identified as Baume-les-Dames or a house at Palmas.

The Life relates that Odile was baptized by a bishop, commonly named as Erhard of Regensburg, and that at baptism she received her sight. When her identity became known, conflict with Duke Adalric continued. Hagiography recounts that a brother who supported her was killed by their father, after which Adalric repented and was reconciled with his daughter. He then granted her the ancestral fortress of Hohenburg, a hilltop site in the Vosges overlooking the Alsatian plain. Odile converted the castle into a monastery for women and became its first abbess. She is also credited with founding Niedermünster at the foot of the same mountain, a second community associated with hospitality and with nuns unable to follow the stricter observance of the heights. These foundations made the mountain, later called Mont Sainte-Odile or Odilienberg, a lasting religious centre.

Adalric himself is a historically attested duke of Alsace in the later seventh century, active in the politics of Austrasia and the Frankish kingdoms. That a daughter of his house was connected with Hohenburg is plausible and forms the likely historical core of the tradition. The blindness, the attempted infanticide, the miraculous gift of sight at baptism, and other miracle stories belong to later hagiography and are not confirmed by contemporary documents. Odile is consistently presented as a consecrated virgin and monastic superior; there is no tradition of marriage or of children. She is held to have died at Hohenburg in the early eighth century, often dated around 720, and to have been buried in her abbey church. Her tomb became a focus of pilgrimage.

From the High Middle Ages Odile has been venerated as the patron saint of Alsace and has been invoked especially by the blind and by those suffering from diseases of the eyes, in keeping with the legend of her own blindness and healing. Her feast day is 13 December. The cult was already established when Pope Leo IX, an Alsatian of the same regional aristocracy, was associated in the eleventh century with the honour paid to her shrine. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval sense is not documented; her status rests on ancient local veneration. Mont Sainte-Odile remains a major pilgrimage site. In art she is typically shown as an abbess, often holding a book on which rest two eyes. While the precise years of her birth and death cannot be verified from contemporary records, she belongs to the generation of Etichonid founders who shaped Alsatian monasticism at the turn of the seventh and eighth centuries.
