Biography

Short Description

Odilo of Cluny was born in 962 into the nobility of Auvergne in west-central France. His father was Berald, lord of Mercoeur, and his mother was Gerberga. As a young man of aristocratic birth he received an education suited to his rank and was placed on an ecclesiastical path. He served as a canon of the collegiate church of Saint-Julien at Brioude before being drawn to the monastic life. He entered the Benedictine abbey of Cluny while it was under the rule of Abbot Mayeul (Majolus). Mayeul recognized his ability, associated him in the government of the house as coadjutor, and designated him as successor. Upon Mayeul’s death in 994 Odilo became the fifth abbot of Cluny. He remained in that office for more than fifty years, until his own death, one of the longest and most influential abbacies of the medieval West.

Under Odilo, Cluny reached a peak of prestige, wealth, and institutional reach. He continued and extended the Cluniac reform, which insisted on a strict reading of the Rule of Saint Benedict, on elaborate liturgy, and on the exemption of Cluny and its dependencies from local episcopal and secular control, the abbey being subject directly to the pope. Many monasteries in France, Italy, Spain, and elsewhere were affiliated to Cluny or reformed according to its customs, so that the Cluniac congregation became a dense network of houses. Odilo was a capable diplomat as well as a monastic superior. He moved among kings and popes, mediated disputes, and supported the Peace of God and Truce of God movements, which sought to restrain private warfare and to protect churches, peasants, and other non-combatants. He maintained close ties with the papacy and with rulers such as King Robert II of France and the Emperor Henry II, and he declined higher ecclesiastical dignities in order to remain at Cluny.

Odilo’s reputation in his own time rested especially on charity and on a liturgical innovation that outlasted him. During the severe famines of the early eleventh century, notably in the 1020s and 1030s, he sold treasures of the church and spent Cluny’s resources to feed the hungry, and he organized regular almsgiving. He is credited with instituting, first at Cluny and its dependent priories, the annual commemoration of all the faithful departed on 2 November, a custom that spread through the Latin Church and became All Souls’ Day. He wrote a life of his predecessor Mayeul, as well as sermons, hymns, and other devotional pieces. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts describe him as austere in personal life, humble in manner, and devoted to prayer, despite the political weight of his office.

Odilo died on 1 January 1049 at the Cluniac priory of Souvigny in the Bourbonnais, where he had gone in his last days and where Mayeul was already buried. He was interred at Souvigny beside his predecessor. Veneration of Odilo as a saint began soon after his death within the Cluniac congregation and spread more widely; he belongs to the era of saints recognized by cult rather than by a later formal papal process of canonization. His principal feast is kept on 1 January, though some local and monastic calendars place it on other days to avoid conflict with the octave of Christmas. Relics and a later translation were associated with Souvigny, which remained a focus of his cult.
