Biography

Short Description

Odilo of Cluny, venerated as Saint Odilo, was the fifth abbot of the Abbey of Cluny and one of the principal figures of Benedictine monasticism in the Latin West during the tenth and eleventh centuries. He was born in the tenth century into a noble family of the Auvergne in west-central France. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts name his father as Berald of Mercœur and his mother as Gerberga. Raised for a secular aristocratic career, he later entered the monastery of Cluny under Abbot Mayeul (Majolus). He was appointed coadjutor and, after Mayeul’s death, became abbot in 994, remaining in office for more than fifty years until his own death.

Under Odilo the Cluniac congregation expanded into a large network of dependent houses across France, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and other regions of Western Europe. Cluny’s liturgical customs, discipline, and relative exemption from local episcopal control were widely imitated. Odilo was described by those who knew him as personally austere and humble; later tradition records self-deprecating language he used of himself as abbot. He was also remembered for charity in times of famine, when he authorized the sale of precious objects belonging to the monastery in order to relieve the poor.

His most enduring liturgical act was the establishment, for the Cluniac houses, of an annual commemoration of all the faithful departed on 2 November, the day after All Saints. The observance spread beyond Cluny and became All Souls’ Day in the Western Church. Odilo also supported the Peace of God and Truce of God, efforts to restrain private warfare by placing certain persons, places, and seasons under ecclesiastical protection. He maintained relations with the papacy and with the Ottonian and Salian emperors, yet he declined elevation to the archbishopric of Lyon and remained at Cluny.

Odilo died on 1 January 1049 at the Cluniac priory of Souvigny, which he was visiting in the course of his duties, and he was buried there. A life of Odilo was written soon afterward by his disciple Jotsald. Veneration of Odilo as a saint began in the eleventh century and continued in Benedictine and wider Catholic tradition. His feast is kept on 1 January, the anniversary of his death. He is invoked especially as a patron of the souls in Purgatory, in connection with the All Souls commemoration associated with his name.
