Biography

Short Description

Odo of Novara, known in Italian as Oddone di Novara, was a twelfth-century priest and Carthusian monk venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church. He was born in Novara, in Piedmont in northern Italy, around the beginning of the twelfth century; no precisely documented birth year survives. After ordination he served as a parish priest. Seeking a stricter life of solitude and prayer, he later entered the Carthusian Order, founded by Bruno of Cologne in the late eleventh century and distinguished by its mix of eremitical withdrawal and communal liturgy.

In the later twelfth century Odo was appointed prior of the Carthusian monastery of Saints Peter and Paul at Geirach (Žiče) in present-day Slovenia, then within the Holy Roman Empire. Žiče was among the earliest Carthusian houses outside France and an important centre for the order in Central Europe. As prior he governed the community spiritually and temporally. His time in office was troubled by conflict with the local clergy and with the Bishop of Trieste over the monastery’s rights or his own authority. Surviving sources do not fully explain the dispute, but it became serious enough that Odo was forced to resign and leave Geirach.

He then returned to Italy and spent his remaining years in a Carthusian community at Tagliacozzo in Abruzzo. There he followed the regular Carthusian round of silence, liturgical prayer, and manual work until his death on 14 January 1200. Later tradition presents him as a model of Carthusian observance, though contemporary vitae and miracle collections from his own century are scarce, as is typical of an order that prized anonymity.

Local and Carthusian devotion to Odo continued after his death. In 1859 Pope Pius IX confirmed his cult, the equivalent of beatification for a figure of this period. His feast is kept on 14 January. Beyond this outline, many details of his life remain sparsely attested.
