Biography

Short Description

Omelyan Kovch (also rendered Omelian or Emilian Kovch) was a Ukrainian Greek Catholic priest born on 20 August 1884 in the village of Kosmach in Galicia, then in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria within Austria-Hungary and now in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine. He came from a clerical family; his father was a Greek Catholic priest. After theological studies in Lviv and in Rome he was ordained to the priesthood in 1911. In keeping with the long-standing discipline of the Eastern Catholic Churches for parish clergy, he married before ordination and became the father of six children. His early years of ministry were spent in Greek Catholic parishes of Galicia during the last period of Habsburg rule and the political collapse that followed the First World War.

During the Polish–Ukrainian war of 1918–1919 he served as a chaplain in the Ukrainian Galician Army and later ministered to interned Ukrainian soldiers. From the early 1920s until his arrest he was parish priest in Peremyshliany (Przemyślany), a small town of mixed Ukrainian, Polish, and Jewish population under the interwar Polish state. There he was known for ordinary parish work, catechesis, and participation in local civic and cooperative life rather than for high ecclesiastical office. He remained a married eparchial priest, not a member of a religious order.

After the Soviet occupation of eastern Galicia in 1939 and the German occupation that began in 1941, Kovch used his position to protect Jews. He issued baptismal certificates, gave shelter, and continued to baptize Jews despite explicit warnings from the German authorities, treating this as a pastoral duty. The Gestapo arrested him on 30 December 1942. After imprisonment in Lviv he was deported to the Majdanek concentration camp near Lublin in German-occupied Poland.

In Majdanek he continued to act as a priest, hearing confessions, celebrating the Divine Liturgy when it was possible, and consoling prisoners of various nationalities and religions. Letters that reached his family from the camp express his conviction that he was needed among the inmates and that he accepted his situation. He died in the camp on 25 March 1944. His remains were almost certainly cremated there; no burial place is known.

Pope John Paul II beatified Kovch in Lviv on 27 June 2001 together with a group of Ukrainian Greek Catholic martyrs of the twentieth century. He has not been canonized. The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church later named him patron of that Church’s pastors. He is remembered as a married parish priest and military chaplain who died in a Nazi camp for aiding Jews and for continuing priestly ministry among prisoners.
