Biography

Short Description

Onisim of the Caves, also known as Onesimus of the Caves or Onisim the Recluse (Church Slavonic and Russian: Онисим Печерский), was an Eastern Orthodox monk and hermit of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the Monastery of the Caves in Kiev. He is numbered among the venerable fathers whose relics rest in the Near Caves, also called the Caves of Saint Anthony. The name Onisim is the East Slavic form of the Greek Onesimos, meaning useful or profitable, a name already familiar in Christian tradition from the Onesimus of the New Testament. Almost nothing of a personal biography has been preserved. Later menologia and synaxaria remember him principally as a zatvornik, a recluse who withdrew into a cave cell for a life of prayer, fasting, and stillness, rather than as the subject of a detailed vita.

The Kiev Pechersk Lavra, founded in the mid-eleventh century by Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves, became the principal monastic centre of Kievan Rus' and a school of both coenobitic and eremitical life. After an initial period of communal formation, some monks received a blessing to live in strict enclosure in the labyrinthine caves that honeycomb the hills above the Dnieper. Onisim is counted among those cave-recluses of the Near Caves. No contemporary life survives, and later compilers of the Kiev Caves Patericon and of East Slavic synaxaria do not record the names of his parents, his place of origin, or the circumstances of his tonsure. Traditional dating in Orthodox calendars and reference works places him in the twelfth or thirteenth century, that is, in the generations after the great founders, when the monastery was already a well-established lavra and when cave reclusion was an established, if exceptional, path within it. Because the written life is lost, a verified year of birth or of death cannot be given, and no office-taking date should be treated as a substitute for either.

As a recluse, Onisim would have lived under the monastic rule of the lavra, which in this period was shaped by the Studite typikon as adapted for Rus' by Saint Theodosius, while observing the additional austerities of enclosure: limited speech, reduced food, and long hours of psalmody in a narrow cave cell. Recluses of the Caves were not wholly cut off from the brotherhood; they typically received food through a small opening and might, at the igumen’s discretion, offer counsel. None of these institutional details can be documented specifically for Onisim; they describe the setting in which later tradition places him. He is not recorded as having held any hierarchical office such as bishop, patriarch, or pope. The entire later tradition presents him as a celibate monk; whether he had been married or had children before tonsure is simply unknown, because no vita survives.

Veneration of Onisim is inseparable from the cult of the Kiev Caves fathers as a group. His relics are preserved in the Near Caves of the lavra. The Orthodox Church commemorates him on 4 October, the day assigned to his individual memory, and again on 28 September at the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev Caves whose relics lie in the Near Caves. He is also remembered on the Second Sunday of Great Lent, the general synaxis of all the saints of the Caves. These commemorations appear in the menologia of the Russian Orthodox Church and in Ukrainian Orthodox calendars. There is no record of a Western-style process of beatification or of a single named canonizing pontiff; like most of the Caves saints, he entered the calendar through local monastic veneration later received by the wider Church of Rus'. No distinctive patronages of places, professions, or illnesses are securely attached to his name in the sources.

The scarcity of biographical data is itself characteristic of many Caves recluses: their hidden life left little for chroniclers to record, and the community remembered them by the place of their relics and by liturgical dates rather than by a narrative of deeds. What can be said with confidence is that Onisim was a male Eastern Orthodox monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, that he lived as a cave recluse, that he died at the monastery in Kiev, and that his memory has been kept in the Orthodox liturgical tradition from the medieval period to the present. Beyond that, responsible history must remain silent rather than fill the gaps with legend.
