Biography

Short Description

Opilius of Piacenza is an obscure figure in Christian hagiography, known principally by a name and a place rather than by a recoverable life story. Reliable historical sources do not preserve a contemporary vita, passio, inscription, or dated notice that would establish when he lived, what office if any he held, or how he died. The designation “of Piacenza” associates him with Placentia, the Roman and later episcopal city on the Po in northern Italy (Aemilia), a see with an attested Christian community from late antiquity. Whether he was born there, served the local church as a cleric, or was merely commemorated there cannot be demonstrated from surviving evidence, and no year of birth or death can be verified.

Piacenza’s early ecclesiastical history is better documented for its bishops—figures such as Victor and Savinus in the fourth and early fifth centuries—than for minor local holy persons. Opilius does not appear among the securely listed bishops of the see, nor does he occupy a prominent place in the major early martyrologies in a form that yields biographical detail. Later local tradition may have kept his memory in the diocese, as often happened with otherwise forgotten confessors or clerics, but such cults, if they existed, typically left little that modern critical hagiography can control. No authentic relics, church dedication of undisputed early date, or liturgical proper that can be independently dated have been identified in standard reference works as belonging to him with certainty.

Because papal canonization as a formal process did not govern the recognition of saints in the first millennium, any veneration of Opilius would have been of the pre-congregation, local type. There is no verified record of a beatification or canonization by a named pope, nor of a universally observed feast day, nor of defined patronages of places, trades, or causes. Claims sometimes encountered in uncritical lists—specific centuries, clerical rank, kinship with other saints, or a precise dies natalis—cannot be confirmed from sources of independent historical value and are therefore omitted here.

In short, Opilius of Piacenza stands among the many named but almost undocumented holy persons of late antique and early medieval Italy. What can be said with caution is only that a male Christian of that name was associated in later memory with Piacenza, that he was not Bishop of Rome or a patriarch of an Eastern see, and that the documentary silence around his life is itself the principal fact available to the historian. Further precision would require evidence that has not been shown to exist.
