Biography

Short Description

Saint Osmund (died 3 December 1099) was a Norman cleric and royal administrator who became the second bishop of Salisbury and a leading figure in the English church in the generation after the Norman Conquest. His date of birth is not recorded in contemporary sources, nor is a precise birthplace. He was a native of Normandy and belonged to the Norman elite that entered England with or soon after William the Conqueror. Later medieval writers identified him as a son of Henry, count of Sées, and as a nephew of King William through a sister named Isabella, but modern historians treat that genealogy as unproven. What can be said with confidence is that Osmund entered the king’s clerical service in England, acted as a royal chaplain or clerk, and by about 1070 held the office of chancellor, authenticating charters and taking part in the central government of the new Norman regime.

In 1078 Osmund was appointed to the bishopric of Salisbury, then seated at the fortified hill of Old Sarum, in succession to Bishop Herman, and he was consecrated that year. He retained the see until his death. As bishop he completed the first cathedral at Old Sarum, a church begun under his predecessor and consecrated in 1092. He endowed the church, gathered a substantial library, and organized a chapter of canons, issuing constitutions (often associated with the so-called Institutio Osmundi) that regulated the life and duties of the cathedral clergy. The liturgical customs of his church later developed into the Use of Sarum, which became the dominant liturgical use in much of medieval England, though the fully elaborated Sarum rite of the later Middle Ages was the work of subsequent generations. The twelfth-century historian William of Malmesbury portrayed Osmund as a man of learning who did not disdain to copy and bind books with his own hands, and as a prelate of personal austerity and generosity to the poor.

Osmund’s episcopate fell in the years of the Domesday inquest and of the consolidation of Norman ecclesiastical structures under Archbishops Lanfranc and Anselm. He appears as a witness to royal and church acts and took part in the business of the English church, but the sources do not support treating him as the architect of Domesday Book itself. He died at his see on 3 December 1099 and was buried in the cathedral at Old Sarum. A cult formed around his tomb. When the cathedral community moved from Old Sarum to the new city of Salisbury in the early thirteenth century, his remains were translated to the new cathedral in 1226, an event that encouraged further reports of miracles. Formal efforts to obtain papal canonization continued for more than two centuries. Pope Callixtus III canonized Osmund in 1457. His principal feast is kept on 4 December. He has been invoked for those suffering from mental illness, paralysis, and toothache, and he remains closely associated with the diocese and cathedral of Salisbury, where his shrine once stood.
