Biography

Short Description

Saint Othmar (also Otmar, Audomar, or Otmar of St. Gall) was an eighth-century priest and monk of Alemannic origin who became the first abbot of the Abbey of St. Gall in what is now northeastern Switzerland. Almost nothing certain is known of his parentage, childhood, or exact place of birth; later tradition simply places him among the Alemanni in the region of Lake Constance. He enters the historical record in the early eighth century as a priest. Around 720, the local magnate Waltram of Thurgau entrusted him with the small community that had grown up at the cell and tomb of Saint Gall (Gallus), the Irish missionary and companion of Columbanus. Othmar gathered those hermits into a cenobitic monastery, built a church, and laid the institutional foundations of what became one of the principal Benedictine houses of the Carolingian world.

Under his abbacy the community first followed practices associated with the Columbanian tradition and then, in the mid-eighth century, adopted the Rule of Saint Benedict. That change is commonly linked with the monastic reforms promoted in the Frankish kingdoms in the age of Boniface and the early Carolingians, and it aligned St. Gall with the mainstream of Western monasticism. Later hagiography stresses Othmar’s pastoral care and charity. He is credited with establishing a hospice or infirmary for the poor and for lepers near the monastery, an act that shaped his later reputation as a helper of the sick. The abbey’s lands and independence, however, brought him into conflict with neighboring secular lords, especially the counts Warin and Ruodhart, royal officials in Raetia who sought control over monastic property.

According to the early vitae, these counts brought accusations against Othmar, including charges of unchastity that the monastic tradition treats as calumnies. He was seized, tried, and imprisoned, first in a dungeon at Bodman on Lake Constance and afterwards on the island of Werd in the Rhine, near present-day Eschenz in Thurgau. There he died on 16 November 759. He was buried on the island. About a decade later his remains were brought back to St. Gall. A more solemn translation of the relics took place in 864, in the time of Abbot Grimald and Bishop Solomon of Constance; that elevation of the body served as the principal public recognition of his sanctity in an age before centralized papal canonization. Early accounts of his life were written or revised in the ninth century by monks of St. Gall, including Gozbert and Walahfrid Strabo.

Othmar has been venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, with his feast observed on 16 November. He is regarded as founder-abbot of St. Gall and as patron of the city, canton, and diocese of St. Gallen. Devotees have invoked him against fever and on behalf of sick children. His cult remained closely tied to the abbey that preserved his relics and promoted his memory through liturgy, art, and monastic writing. The historical Othmar is thus known both as an organizer of Benedictine life on the upper Rhine and as a figure whose imprisonment and death in exile became the core of a regional saint’s legend.
